Alabama's Aaron Martens Extends
Lead With More Than 100 Pounds at Bassmaster Elite Series Event
at Falcon Lake

5, 2008 - ZAPATA, Texas Inching closer to his fifth
BASS win, Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., distanced himself from
his nearest competitor, Mark Davis of Mt. Ida, Ark., by more
than 7 pounds at the Bassmaster Elite Series' Lone Star Shootout
presented by Longhorn on big-bass factory Falcon Lake.
The competition will end Sunday with only the top
12 anglers competing and the champion earning $100,000. Martens
has led wire to wire and has totaled 109 pounds, 8 ounces, over
three days of competition. Breaking the BASS four-day heavyweight
record of 122 pounds, 14 ounces, is a mere formality now for
Martens.
"I really want to win this one," said
Martens, the 2005 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year.
"I'm frustrated because I think I left some weight out
there and I would like a more comfortable cushion, but that's
fishing."
Martens has primarily worked a Carolina rig in
deeper water to entice the biggest bass and will continue to
do so Sunday. While he has mostly focused on a shared main area
with Byron Velvick, who is in third, he had the foresight during
practice to seek out other productive areas.
Martens, 35, feels that the shared area hasn't
maintained its productivity and will start on one of his secondary
areas first thing Sunday morning. He has other areas that he
feels could be productive but noted that other anglers have found
those as well.
The versatile Martens estimates he will need to
catch 35 pounds on the final day to take the victory. That would
put his four-day total north of 140 pounds, demolishing the existing
record.
"The record is nice but I'm really focused
on this win," said Martens, a West Coast product originally
from California. "I hope I can hold on but I have fished
great this week and I absolutely love this lake."
Davis has maintained consistency while other anglers
have faltered. His Saturday catch of 33 pounds, 4 ounces, was
his third consecutive limit weighing more than 33 pounds. The
three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year gained
ground on Martens and is one big bite away from catching him
for his sixth BASS victory.
"I'm doing all I can do but I guess it's not
quite enough," said Davis, who has 102 pounds, 1 ounces.
"Overall, I'm happy with my performance though. There
is not an angler on this Earth who would say they are disappointed
with more than 100 pounds over three days."
Davis has 15 to 20 spots and is executing a milk
run on the areas. He said that the bite heats up in the afternoon
and he was able to upgrade his weight significantly at the end
of the day. He feels that his area could yield 50 pounds Sunday
and hoped that the decreased boat pressure on his areas could
help him significantly.
Slipping from second to third was Byron Velvick
of Del Rio, Texas, with 101 pounds, 12 ounces. Velvick qualified
for his second Elite 12 cut of the season. Moving up from eighth
to fourth was Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., with 95-9. In
fifth was Paul Elias of Laurel, Miss., with 94-13.
Also qualifying for the Elite 12 cut was 2006 Toyota
Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli (sixth) and
Texan Ben Matsubu (10th).
In the co-angler division, Randall Jackson of Broken
Arrow, Okla., set the co-angler BASS heavyweight record with
83 pounds, 3 ounces, winning the $25,000 top prize. Jackson
outlasted Californian Alexander Meza (76-07) and Louisiana's
Russell Lohman (74-14).
The Lone Star Shootout presented by Longhorn marks
the first time BASS has visited Falcon Lake in Zapata, Texas.
