Kansas man wins berth for finals in
Field & Stream's Total Outdoorsman Challenge

15 of 16 positions filled; Wild Card berth deadline is July 6th

July 3, 2008 - INDEPENDENCE, Mo., --- Tim Gajewski, Lawrence, Kan., was one of two men to win in the regional competition in Independence for a berth at the finals this September in Field & Stream magazine's Total Outdoorsman Challenge presented by partner Mobil 1. This is the fifth year that Field & Stream, the largest and best known outdoor publication in the world, has held the event

to find the best-of-the-best overall outdoorsperson among men and women anglers, hunters and marksmen in the U.S.

The competition, the last of 24 local qualifiers and six regional tournaments was held June 28st at the Bass Pro Shops' Independence location. Winners of local qualifiers from several Midwest states were judged on time and accuracy in bait casting, fly- casting, archery and air rifle skills.

Gajewski,scored first in fly casting, fifth in air rifle, sixth in archery, and eighth in bait-casting to finish first overall.

Cory Yarmuth of McHenry Ill., was the other competitor to nail down a berth by scoring firsts in the air rifle and bait casting competitions, seventh in fly- casting and 11th in archery. Both competed against men and women from previously held spring qualfiiers in the Illinois cities of Bolingbrook and Gurnee, along with Columbia and Independence Mo., and Olathe, Kan.

Gajewski and Yarmuth now advance to the finals in Springfield, Mo., September 12 - 15, with 16 competitors facing off ­ the top two from each of the six regions, the top three finishers from the 2007 national tournament and one wild card selection, with a deadline of July 6th, made by the editors of Field & Stream.

At the finals the competitors will go head-to-head in seven outdoor skill challenges including fly-casting, bait casting, shotgun, rifle, archery, endurance skills and ATV handling. The top finisher will be awarded $25,000 in cash and prizes as part of a $50,000 purse.

One more Wild Card entry left; deadline July 6

Those men and women hopefuls who couldn't make it to a local qualifier but think they have what it takes to capture the title can apply by July 6th online for the special wild card spot. Prizes

All competitors at the final will receive cash prizes of at least $600 (last place) along with travel money. The winner will receive $25,000 in cash plus more prizes and a spread in Field & Stream magazine, extensive coverage on FieldandStream.com and the Field & Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge television show.

Two-time and current defending champ Paul Thompson of Marion, N.C. was featured on the cover of the May issue and will be back to defend his title. The second place finalist receives $2,500 and third place gets $2,000. In addition at the finals all 16 competitors will receive gift bags worth more than $400 with great sponsor gear.
