Plenty of fun and awards for
participants
in two tournaments at Bronson City Lake
Bronson, Kansas
Saturday, July 3, 2004
The Bronson Free Kids Fishing Derby, hosted by Chris Woods, was
a huge success. Thirty-seven kids from 3 to 15 years old showed
up at the Bronson City Lake to take part in the fun sport of
fishing. The derby started at 8 am on Saturday, July 3rd and
the fishing ended at 11 am. The weather was excellent for fishing.
Kirk Camac, the Uniontown High School FFA President, had several
FFA members present all day to help register the kids, measure
and record the fish, and cook and serve lunch. After registering,
every participating kid received a goody bag filled with fishing
tackle and a t-shirt from OK Kids. Using either live or artificial
bait, the young anglers tried their luck in catching a lunker.
The kids fished in two separate age divisions, 10 years old and
under and 11 to 15 years old. Trophies and certificates were
given to the young anglers who managed to catch the longest fish,
shortest fish, and the most fish in his or her age category.
In the 10 and under division, Tyeesha Perry , from Bronson, won
the longest fish with a channel cat measuring 20 1/4 inches.
Also from Bronson, Seth Cuppy took both the shortest fish, 4
inches, and the most fish, 13 total. The 11 to 15 year old category
also had two winners. Jesse Camac, from Bronson, had the shortest
fish only measuring 3 inches, while Luke Wheeler had the longest
fish, a 20 inch channel cat, and the most fish, totaling 9. After
a hard morning of fishing, the kids enjoyed grilled hotdogs and
chips generously donated by Chuck and Sandra Woods, and ice cold
soda donated by Coca-Cola of Fort Scott and Jolt Cola. After
lunch, Fishing Conservationist, Jim Bussone, gave the kids a
wonderful talk about why we fish and how to conserve the sport
of fishing. Before the trophies were awarded, the youngsters
had the chance at winning several nice fishing prizes from a
drawing. Several ki! ds staye d to fish more after the derby
was all over. I want to thank everyone who helped make the Bronson
Free Kids Fishing Derby a huge success. A special thanks goes
out to the City of Bronson, the Uniontown FFA, Jolt Cola, Coca-Cola,
Andrew Ohlbaum, Carl Marsh, Kansas Wildlife Foundation, and Nick
Russo. If anyone would like to donate prizes for next years derby
please contact Chris Woods by phone at 620-939-4572 or by e-mail
at mrcwoods@hotmail.com.
The Bronson Bass Fishing Tournament
had 10 entries. The largest bass tipped the scales at 3 1/2 pounds.
The biggest bass won $10. First place received $84 and second
got $56.
The adult softball games were
a hit! Everyone had a blast.
The fireworks display by Randell
Woods was awesome. It lasted almost 45 minutes.
