3 - final day
Kansan Kevin Miller
climbs back to 21st in overall standings
SOUTH AFRICA'S ANRÉ DE VILLIERS
CROWNED FIRST INTERNATIONAL BASS FEDERATION CHAMPION
Six Anglers Advance to the 2006 CITGO
Bassmaster Classic
Jan. 13, 2006 - LEESBURG, Fla. Tension,
excitement and big bass led the way Friday in the 33rd BASS Federation
Championship as six anglers advanced to bass fishing's biggest
dance, the CITGO Bassmaster Classic on Lake Tohopekaliga, Feb.
24-26, in Kissimmee, Fla. South Africa's Anré De Villiers
led the way, sweeping both the Championship and Southern division
by more than 6 pounds. Kevin Miller of Augusta had four fish
today. Those fish let him climb to 21st place in overall rankings
from 31st after yesterday's weighin. He finished third in the
Central Divion results.
Tune in to ESPN2 Saturday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. EST to catch all
of the excitement. Coverage will re-air on Jan. 27 at 7 a.m.
and again on Jan. 30 at noon.
De Villiers fished waters he previously staked out on the Harris
Chain of Lakes during pre-practice in December. He returned to
the same sweet spot each day of the tournament. "I told
a select few people I thought I had a good chance to come here
and win this tournament," said De Villiers. "Losing
yesterday was a technical move in my strategy. I left my area
alone because I knew I could come back to it today."
De Villiers remained in Lake Harris, focused on deep-water structure
he found about 100 yards offshore, dropping from 8 to 20 feet
in places. All but one of his 15 fish over the three days were
caught on Carolina-rigged, junebug trick worms. And, while this
strategy played to his advantage on the Harris Chain, De Villiers
isn't counting on it to help him at the Bassmaster Classic, as
he knows very little about Lake Toho and will experiment with
different techniques.
But De Villiers didn't want to think that far ahead at
least, not yet. "Today, it's absolutely incredible,"
he said, "I'm really, really proud. It is still sinking
in."
In addition to De Villiers, five other anglers realized their
dreams Friday as they weighed-in and learned they were Classic-bound.
Bob Soley of Trenton, N.J., jumped from third to take the lead
in the Mid-Atlantic division with 29 pounds, 5 ounces. Joel St.
Germain of Cumberland, R.I. held his Eastern division lead, weighing
in 9 pounds, 4 ounces for a three-day total of 24-8.
James Kennedy of Lacombe, La., led the Central division with
a total weight of 21-9 and Joe Conway of Colorado Springs, Colo.,
moved from third to first in the Western division with a five-fish
limit of 15-7 and a three-day total of 30 pounds even. Conway's
one-day catch of 15-7 also earned him the BUSCH Heavyweight of
the Tournament title, giving him one of 13 berths to the BUSCH
Shootout, taking place on an undisclosed mystery lake somewhere
in the United States, under a modified format announced hours
before the tournament. The dates of the tournament have not been
announced.
The BUSCH Shootout champion will collect a $100,000 grand prize,
and each remaining participant receives $5,000, for a total purse
of $160,000.
Jimmy Johnson of LaCrosse, Wis., was the biggest mover of the
day, weighing in a five-fish limit of 12 pounds, 4 ounces and
jumping from seventh to first in the Northern division. Johnson
bested his competition by just 1 ounce. "I had been on these
fish all week, and I finally got them," said Johnson. "I
just can't believe it!"
In other news, 92 CastingKids contenders from 46 states, as well
as Washington, D.C., and Ontario, Canada, competed Saturday in
one of six divisions Northern, Southern, Central, Eastern,
Western and Mid-Atlantic at the Bassmaster CastingKids
semifinals at Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg. Twelve
children in their respective age group, 7-10 and 11-14, have
advanced to the national finals at the CITGO Bassmaster Classic,
scheduled to take place Feb. 25 at the Orange County Convention
Center in Orlando, Fla.
The following competitors ages 7 to 10 advanced: Charles Rankin
of Argyle, Iowa, Northern division; Ryan Bush of Gap, Va., Southern
division; Chase Laflamme of East Waterboro, Maine, Eastern division;
Bryce Bason of Mill Hall, Pa., Mid-Atlantic division; Kiana Clark
of Richland, Wash., Western division; and Brad Schaefer of Omaha,
Neb., Central division.
The following competitors age 11 to 14 also advanced: Josh Koester
of Teutopolis, Ill., Northern division; Ryan Mallette of Okeechobee,
Fla., Southern division; Cory Laflamme, East Waterboro, Maine,
Eastern division; Alex Thomas of Crofton, Md., Mid-Atlantic division;
Jori Clark Richland of Richland, Wash., Western division; and
Cory Schuman of Lincoln, Neb., Central division.
All 12 finalists will earn a scholarship ranging from $500 to
$5,000, with a total of $21,000 awarded at the Classic.

Kansan Kevin Miller slips to
second in Central Region
Lowen takes lead of Championship 2006
B.A.S.S. National Federation Championship
Lowen, of Cincinnati and competing in
the Southern division, didn't have a long way to go to reach
the top
Jan. 12, 2006 - LEESBURG,
Fla. Though international anglers commandeered Day One of the
BASS Federation Championship, it was stateside anglers who overpowered
the field Thursday, including tournament leader and 2006 CITGO
Bassmaster Elite Series angler Bill Lowen of Ohio. Kevin Miller
of Augusta, Kansas had a tougher day than yesterday when he boated
five fish and had the lead in Central Division. He weighen in
one fish and slipped to second place in the region and 31st overall.
Lowen, of Cincinnati and competing in the Southern
division, didn't have a long way to go to reach the top. The
formerly second-place angler pounced on Day 1 leader Anré
De Villiers of South Africa by catching 10 pounds, 14 ounces
and bringing his total weight to 24-9. De Villiers fought back,
though, with a 9-2 bag and settled into second place with 24-1.
Less than one pound separates the anglers, who are vying for
one of six berths into the CITGO Bassmaster Classic on Lake Tohopekaliga
in Kissimmee, Fla., Feb. 24-26.
To see the nail-biting ending, tune in to ESPN2
Saturday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. EST. Coverage will re-air on Jan.
27 at 7 a.m. and again on Jan. 30 at noon.
"As soon as the camera boat was on me, I had
my first fish," said Lowen. "I told him he was my lucky
charm," he joked.
Lowen covered a half-mile stretch, flipping a 4-inch
craw-type lure into thick grass and lily pads. "I started
getting good bites at 10 a.m.," said Lowen. "All the
fish are buried up in the grass and it's like looking for a needle
in a haystack. Tomorrow I've got to slow down and pick it apart
a little better than I did today."
De Villiers said he would revisit his sweet spot
on Friday, hoping to find the bigger bite. "The fish moved
a lot today, and I just got smaller ones," he said.
Italy's Alessandro Debbi remained the sole international
angler to keep the lead within his division. Debbi weighed a
1-pound, 8-ounce fish, or just enough to stay on top in the Northern
standings with 12-8.
"I lost three fish, broke off one and caught
only one keeper," said Debbi. "It wasn't a bad day
of fishing, just a bad day for me. Tomorrow will be much better."
Joel St. Germain of Cumberland, R.I., leads the
Eastern division with 15 pounds, 4 ounces; Greg Alexander of
Hebron, Md., is top of the Mid-Atlantic division with 19-3; James
Kennedy commands the Central division with 11-2; and Marc Lippincott
of Spokane, Wash., is winning the Western division with 19 pounds
even.
Greg Alexander of Hebron, Md., is top of the Mid-Atlantic
division with 19-3.
All 55 anglers will return to fish on Friday, with
their weights carrying over. In addition to $50,000 in total
prize money awarded at the Federation Championship, the top angler
from each division will advance to the CITGO Bassmaster Classic,
Feb. 24-26, on Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee, Fla.

INTERNATIONAL ANGLERS DOMINATE DAY 1 OF
BASS FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIP
South Africa, Canada, Italy Lead 3 of the 6 Competitive Divisions
Jan. 11, 2006 - LEESBURG, Fla. International
anglers took the field by storm on Day 1 of the BASS Federation
Championship on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla. Kevin
Miller of Augusta leads Central Region anglers with his five
fish weigh-in and ranks 16th overall after the first day of fishing.
Of the six Federation divisions, Italy's Alessandro Debbi led
the North with 11 pounds, while Canada's Garrett Green edged
the East with 11-5 and South Africa's Anré De Villiers
swept the South - as well as the entire field - with a sack of
14 pounds, 15 ounces. De Villiers also took Purolator Big Bass
honors and an extra $1,000 when he tipped the scales with an
8-pound, 3-ounce largemouth.
For fans who couldn't see that largemouth and other action live,
ESPN2 to will air coverage of the Federation Championship on
Saturday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. EST. It will re-air on Jan. 27
at 7 a.m. and again on Jan. 30 at noon.
Though he normally power fishes, De Villiers slowed down his
fishing to bring in a five-fish limit. "Today, I fished
really slow," he said. "I had to fish slow during practice
plus it's been cool so I knew I'd have to slow down." De
Villiers, 43, of Cape Town, was focused on deep-water structure
and cast worms.
Meanwhile, Green of Bracebridge, Canada, had a nearly 2-pound
lead in the Eastern division where he caught his five-fish limit
by fishing slow around boat docks and in grass.
Debbi of Sassuolo, Italy, led the Northern division by 5 pounds,
14 ounces. He is using techniques he employs in his home waters,
including flipping and pitching soft-plastic creature baits into
cattails 5 to 6 feet deep. He keyed in on canals and rivers,
looking for transitioning bass. He's also looking for the golden
ticket in the tournament a berth into the CITGO Bassmaster
Classic. "It's been my dream for 20 years," he
said. "If I achieve this, I'll be really excited."
Leading the other three divisions are state-side anglers. Kevin
Miller of Augusta, Kansas, commands the Central division with
7-11; Bill Golightly of Preston, Idaho, is winning the Western
division with 12-3; and Greg Alexander of Hebron, Md., is on
top in the Mid-Atlantic division with 10-4.
Bobby Lane, the local favorite from Lakeland, Fla., was in eighth
in the Southern division, but said he was eager to change tactics
and improve his performance for tomorrow. "I'm going to
have to make some adjustments," he said.
All 55 anglers will return to fish on Thursday and Friday, with
their weights carrying over. In addition to $50,000 in total
prize money awarded at the Federation Championship, the top angler
from each division will advance to the CITGO Bassmaster Classic,
Feb. 24-26, on Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee, Fla.
