OKLAHOMA DOMINATES BASS FEDERATION NATION CENTRAL DIVISIONAL

June 16, 2006 - WAGONER, Okla. - An expired fish penalty decided the winner of the BASS Federation Nation Central Divisional on Friday at Fort Gibson Lake.

In a barnburner of a finish, Oklahoma angler Royce Dennington edged fellow Oklahoman Lee Sanders by 4 ounces, the amount of an expired fish penalty Sanders received for his final day catch. Dennington managed to win the overall title with a three-day total of 35 pounds, 14 ounces while Sanders took the runner-up spot with 35-10.

Dennington, a 38-year-old high school teacher from Barnsdall, Okla., relied on a 1/2-ounce black CR Custom buzz bait to catch several fish early each day and the lure accounted for some of his heaviest fish throughout the tournament, he said. "I had to reel it real fast and the fish would just annihilate it," said the Bartlesville Bassmasters Club member, who was competing in his first Divisional.

Each afternoon, Dennington would cull some of his keepers by slowly dragging a 3/4-ounce orange-and-red CR Custom football head jig and Zoom Critter Craw along rock ledges. The jig produced two 5-pounders for Dennington on Day 1 and helped him move into fifth place, despite catching only four keepers.

"The buzz bait bite was really good the second day," revealed Dennington, who moved into first place on Day 2 with an 11-14 limit. "I went to a new area where I had pre-fished and the fish were loaded up in there."

Running the buzz bait along weedy points was a key for Dennington. "When they dropped the lake, a lot of people abandoned the grass because they thought the fish weren't there," he said. "The fish were there but I had to get them to react to the bait and not just feed on it. By reeling that buzz bait fast, I was able to get them to react to it."

His familiarity with the lake also helped Dennington because it allowed him to fish new areas each day. He believed some anglers struggled because they would go back to the same spots rather than trying new water.

Dennington caught four keepers on the buzz bait on Friday, including a quality fish that came later in the day and helped him clinch the tournament. A strong wind made it difficult for him to drag the football jig in deeper water, but he still managed to catch two keepers on it. He finished with an 11-11 limit to hold off Sanders' late charge.

While the overall title went to Dennington, seven other winners will join him and advance to amateur angling's only international championship, the BASS Federation Nation National Championship. The Central Divisional is a regional qualifying event that advances the top finisher from each of the eight Federation Nations competing in the tournament to the national championship, which will be held in January on Alabama's Lake Neely Henry.

The other state winners qualifying for the Federation Championship include Mike Edrington (Kansas), Bruce Shockley (Louisiana), Pat Klausen (Nebraska), Luke Payne (Missouri), Hoyt Atkins (Arkansas), Mark Wilkinson (Mississippi) and Jimmy Johnson (Texas).

Oklahoma won state bragging rights and $14,000 of the $41,000 total purse by bringing a total of 127 fish weighing 270 pounds, 10 ounces to the scales during the three-day contest.

"We had quite a few guys who were pretty good on this lake," said Sanders, the Oklahoma BASS Federation Nation president. "We would meet each night and let each guy do what he had confidence in doing."

Oklahoma anglers dominated the top of the standings as Dennington, Sanders and George Toalson, Claremore, Okla., finished first, second and third respectively. Three other members of the 12-angler squad also finished in the top 20 individual standings.

Texas angler Trent Huckaby kept Oklahoma from sweeping all the tournament honors, as he won the $1,000 Purolator Big Bass of the Tournament award. He
caught a 5-pound, 10-ounce largemouth Thursday while swimming a 5/16-ounce white jig with a white plastic craw trailer under the foam of a dock.

OKLAHOMA'S DENNINGTON TAKES OVER LEAD AT FEDERATION NATION CENTRAL DIVISIONAL

June 15, 2006 - WAGONER, Okla. - School's out for the summer, but Oklahoma school teacher Royce Dennington appears to still be giving some lessons at the BASS Federation Nation's Central Divisional at Fort Gibson Lake.

Rather than teaching the Golden Rule today, the 38-year-old teacher from Barnsdall, Okla., used a Golden Rule Measuring Board to bump his five-fish limit weighing 11 pounds, 14 ounces. The limit allowed Dennington to jump from fifth to first place with a two-day total of 24-3, while Day 1 leader George Toalson of Claremore, Okla., dropped to second place with 22-11.

Competing in his first Divisional, Dennington keyed on offshore structure to catch all of his fish. "I have fished new water every day and the fish have come differently every time," said the Bartlesville Bassmasters Club member. "Today, I fished a little deeper with a 3/4-ounce CR custom football head jig, dragging it along some ledges and other structure."

The wind made it difficult for Dennington to feel bites but he still managed to catch a limit. "Even though it's a deep bite I caught my fish early," said Dennington. "I kept banging the jig down in those rocks and every once in a while I would get a fish."

The Oklahoma angler has noticed the dropping lake level has changed the fishing since the first practice day. "I caught fish pretty good that first day but that bite is gone and now I have to go offshore to catch them," said Dennington, who believes the fish are just starting to bunch up on the offshore structure. "They had been off roaming around a little bit but now the structure is a little bit better for me."

The top finisher from each Federation Nation advances to the BASS Federation Nation Championship, the only international contest giving amateur bass anglers a shot at a world title and possibly earning a berth to the CITGO Bassmaster Classic. Leading their states after the second round are Dennington for Oklahoma, James Elvis Jeanminett, (Louisiana), Mike Edrington (Kansas), Rob Weberg (Nebraska), Luke Payne (Missouri), Hoyt Atkins (Arkansas), Jimmy Johnson (Texas) and Teb Jones (Mississippi).

The tournament also pits 12-man teams from eight states vying for a total payout of $41,000, with the prize monies to be allocated to each states' conservation, civic and fishing outreach programs. Oklahoma still leads with an accumulated weight of 184 pounds, 6 ounces while Arkansas has moved into the runner-up spot with 172-1.

The Central Divisional is the third of six regional qualifying events for the BASS Federation Nation National Championship. The event is scheduled for January 2007 at Lake Neely Henry in Alabama.

The final Central Divisional weigh-in begins at 2:30 p.m. CT tomorrow at Taylor Ferry North Ramp near Wagoner.

Sponsors of the Federation Nation include CITGO Petroleum Corp., Toyota, Busch Beer, Purolator, Triton Boats, Mercury Marine, Berkley, Lowrance Electronics, MotorGuide and Evan Williams.

LURE COMPANY OWNER LEADS FEDERATION NATION CENTRAL DIVISIONAL

June 14, 2006 - WAGONER, Okla. - Owning a lure company sure was beneficial for George Toalson on the first day of the BASS Federation Nation Central Divisional at Fort Gibson Lake.

The 55-year-old Toalson took the lead in the three-day tournament by catching a five-fish limit weighing 15 pounds, 3 ounces to nudge runner-up Bruce Shockley of Hammond, La., who finished the day with a 14-10 limit. Toalson owns Gene Larew Lures Company and is competing in his first Central Divisional.

After making an adjustment, the North Oklahoma City Bassmasters Club member used plenty of his company's Hoo Daddy and Ring Shad lures to catch all of his keepers.

"The fishing was a lot slower than I thought it would be," said Toalson, who joined the Federation Nation this year. "It was a long time before we started catching them. We tried all the shallow stuff and the water was dropping and it was all bad. We finally started going off shore and caught every single one of our fish out 10 to 15 feet deep."

During practice, Toalson tried both shallow and off-shore patterns and had success both ways. "Since we started practicing Sunday the lake has probably dropped 18 inches to 2 feet," said Toalson. "The off-shore fishing was slower but the fish were bigger."

When he switched to fishing deeper water today, Toalson finally landed his first keeper around 11 a.m. "I caught my last fish on the last cast I made," he disclosed.

The Claremore, Okla., angler made a milk run of chunk rock points to amass his limit. "I hit a lot of spots and we would seem to get just one fish to a spot," he said.

The Central Divisional is the third of six regional qualifying events that advance top Federation Nation competitors from America and abroad to the only international world fish-off for amateur anglers, the BASS Federation Nation Narional Championship. The event is scheduled for January 2007 at Lake Neely Henry in Alabama.

The tournament is two contests in one. The individual competition will determine the overall winner and the top finisher from each Federation Nation that advance to next January's championship and possibly on to the CITGO Bassmaster Classic. Leading their states after today are Toalson for Oklahoma, Shockley (Louisiana), Kevin Miller (Kansas), Rob Weberg (Nebraska), Luke Payne (Missouri), Shawn Gordon (Arkansas), Mike Kernan (Texas) and Mark Wilkinson (Mississippi).
State bragging rights will also be claimed by one of the eight Federation Nations competing here. Oklahoma's 12-man team accumulated 93 pounds, 12 ounces today to lead the state competition. Texas is in second place with 92-05. The teams are vying for a total payout of $41,000, with the prize monies to be allocated to each states' conservation, civic and fishing outreach programs.
The Central Divisional weigh-ins begin at 2:30 p.m. CT the next two days at Taylor Ferry North Ramp near Wagoner.

Sponsors of the Federation Nation include CITGO Petroleum Corp., Toyota, Busch Beer, Purolator, Triton Boats, Mercury Marine, Berkley, Lowrance Electronics, MotorGuide and Evan Williams.
