WOLAK TAKES HOME BASSMASTER
AMERICAN
July 30, 2006 - CHARLOTTE, N.C. Toyota
angler Dave Wolak of Warrior Run, Pa., became the second Bassmaster
Major winner in the history of BASS when he efficiently outpaced
five other anglers at the Bassmaster American presented by Advance
Auto Parts on Lake Wylie. Wolak who qualified for the American
because he was the 2005 Toyota Rookie of the Year took the $250,000
win with a two-day total of 25 pounds, 14 ounces, after he weighed
in five fish for 10-8 on Sunday.
"This has changed my whole life, said Wolak.
"Everything is surreal.
An astonished Wolak celebrated his first-ever
BASS victory on stage with his parents, who drove overnight from
Pennsylvania to support their son. Wolak,s wife, Jessica, was
not in attendance because she was home caring for their newborn
son, Jacob.
Wolak said he spent the tournament sight-fishing
on flat banks where he pitched worms or skimmed frogs. He called
Lake Wylie a "junk fishing lake and to master it, put 10
rods on the deck and picked up the most appropriate one for the
conditions.
But this win nearly didn,t happen for Wolak. Though
the 29-year-old has earned nearly $200,000 fishing BASS since
2002, he made the difficult decision to quit his job he worked
at a medical equipment store fitting children for wheelchairs
and concentrate solely on fishing about two years ago. Even
though he had a good 2005 season, finishing fourth in the CITGO
Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, he lacked sponsors and
considered leaving the sport. But Toyota, the official truck
of BASS, added Wolak to their pro team in February 2006, allowing
him to continue his BASS career.
"Without the Toyota sponsorship, he wouldn,t
be here, said Kevin VanDam of Michigan, who placed second in
the event with a two-day total of 22-15. Ten ounces behind VanDam
was Gerald Swindle of Hayden, Ala., in third. In fourth was hometown
favorite Jason Quinn of Lake Wylie, S.C., with 21-13. In fifth
was Mark Menendez of Kentucky with 19-3 and Terry Scroggins of
Florida placed sixth with 9-11 after zeroing on Sunday.
VanDam,s second-place finish gave him his fourth
consecutive top-10 BASS showing. VanDam previously had a streak
of nine top-10 showings, but was disqualified at the Santee Cooper
Showdown presented by MotorGuide in South Carolina in late March.
VanDam, who worked topwater baits on Wylie, was disappointed
but characterized Wolak as a "super guy who works hard and
is a gentleman on the water.
VanDam also recaptured the BASS all-time money
winnings lead from Denny Brauer of Missouri. He has earned $2,095,558,
or about $5,000 more than Brauer.
Swindle,s third-place finish was his best of the
entire season. The personable pro, best known for his ever-growing
glossary of "Swindle-isms said he lost two different 3-pounders
because he was overexcited and tried to flip them into the boat.
"It was a bad mistake and it tore me down, he said.
Quinn,s fourth-place showing didn,t bother his
contingent of fans who showed up in shirts that read, "Oh
my gosh! It,s Jason Quinn. The former Lake Wylie guide said his
downfall was spending too much time in shallow water. When he
finally started fishing crankbaits on offshore structure, the
bite turned on. "If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn,t
change a thing.
CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series anglers will have
one week off before they prepare to fish the Capitol Clash, Aug.
10-13, on the Potomac River in Charles County, Md. The final
Bassmaster Major, the Bassmaster Legends, will follow on Aug.
24-27 on the Arkansas River in Little Rock, Ark.

Wolak takes commanding lead
in Bassmaster American
Same-Day Television Coverage to air
Sunday on ESPN2 at 7:00 pm Eastern
July 28, 2006 - CHARLOTTE, N.C. Dave Wolak
has had a hectic - but memorable - week. On Tuesday, the 29-year-old
celebrated the birth of his first child - a healthy baby boy
named Jacob. Now, just four days later, the Warrior Run, Pa.,
angler is on the verge of creating a $250,000 nest egg for his
growing family.
On Saturday, Wolak caught a limit of 15 pounds,
6 ounces at the Bassmaster Memorial presented by Advance Auto
Parts on Lake Wylie and stood nearly 5 pounds in front of 2004
CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year Gerald Swindle of Alabama
(10-7).
Wolak came into Day 3 in 11th place, but weights
were zeroed for the top 12 anglers who advanced. Only the top
six will fish the same six-hole course in a timed, rotating format
on Sunday.
Capitalizing on new water previously off-limits
to anglers, Wolak employed a fast and furious pace. He didn,t
concentrate on a particular lure and instead went "junking
around the course.
"I am trying not to think about what winning
this thing would mean to me, Wolak said. "I have learned
to adapt to the conditions and I have no preconceived notions
about what I should do. I think that is a huge help out here.
The Bassmaster American marks the first time Wolak
has ever fished Lake Wylie. Predictably, he had nothing but praise
for the 13,443-acre fishery that anglers are calling a welcomed
challenge. "I love this lake and there is a ton of fish
in here, Wolak said.
Though he is in a distant second place, Swindle
is looking for his first BASS win at this tournament. He,s amassed
more than $500,000 in career BASS earnings- but is "aching
to take the victory. "I saw some things out there that will
definitely help me out tomorrow, the 36-year-old said.
Rounding out the top six who advanced to Sunday
were Floridian Terry Scroggins (9-11), two-time CITGO Bassmaster
Classic champion Kevin VanDam (9-2), Kentucky,s Mark Menendez
(8-14) and local favorite and former Lake Wylie guide Jason Quinn
(8-6).
Much to the delight of an enthusiastic hometown
crowd, Quinn, from Lake Wylie, S.C., squeaked into the six-angler
field after his weight tied with 2004 CITGO Bassmaster Classic
champion Takahiro Omori,s. Because Quinn is higher than Omori
in the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, he advanced.
But it wasn,t all bad news for Omori. With the
sixth-place finish, the talented Texan crossed the $1 million
threshold in BASS career earnings. He became the 17th angler
to accomplish the feat.
Hole priority tomorrow will be awarded to anglers
based on current Angler of the Year standings. Kevin VanDam leads
the six-angler field in those rankings.

Timmy Horton Grabs Bassmaster American
Lead
$250,000 Top Prize; Same-Day Television
Coverage Highlight 2nd Major
July 28, 2006 - CHARLOTTE Surging from 13th
place, Alabama,s Timmy Horton seized the Day 2 lead of the Bassmaster
American presented by Advance Auto Parts with a limit of 15 pounds,
12 ounces on Friday.
Although Horton owned a slight lead over Alabama,s
Lee Bailey, Horton,s two-day total of 27 pounds, 8 ounces and
the other weights of the 12 anglers advancing to Day 3 will be
zeroed. Anglers will fish a timed, six-hole course format.
"I feel real fortunate, said the 33-year old.
"Everything came together today and I am really excited
to move on to fish the six-hole course.
Fishing fans can tune into ESPN2 Sunday at 7 p.m.
ET to catch all of the on-the-water action from Sunday,s final
day of competition.
Horton, a three-time BASS winner, fished the lower
end of Lake Wylie - a popular location for a number of anglers.
Horton declined to discuss specifics about his presentation or
equipment.
At 11 a.m., Horton had his sizable limit and used
a majority of time to explore the six-hole course where anglers
will fish Saturday and Sunday. Athletes are allowed to
ride through the course, but can,t fish any areas within it.
Horton,s performance is a far cry from his disappointing
48th-place showing at the 2004 CITGO Bassmaster Classic on the
13,443-acre Wylie.
Bailey, in second place, also performed poorly
at the 2004 Classic. But the one-time BASS winner is looking
to bury that 37th-place finish and has developed a pattern he
believes will help him. "The way I am fishing, I can fish
that it in every hole with success, the 44-year-old said.
"I am so confident in my pattern right now that I just want
to get out in the water tomorrow.
Bailey called the pattern a "unique one but
described it just as Kevin VanDam did of his tatic: A fusion
of power and finesse fishing.
Meanwhile, highlighting a star-studded field advancing
to Day 3 were 2004 Angler of the Year Gerald Swindle (26-4) in
third, two-time Classic champion VanDam in fourth (25-11) and
three-time BASS winner Terry Scroggins (23-12) in fifth.
Pleasing the crowd was local favorite Jason Quinn
who vaulted into the top 12 with a solid Day 2 limit of 11 pounds,
12 ounces. Quinn finished in a tie for ninth with Takahiro Omori
(20-14), who won the 2004 Classic on this lake. But with Quinn,s
knowledge of the fishery, he enters Saturday as a local favorite.
"I can,t wait to get on the course tomorrow,
said Quinn, responding to a contingent of fans that cheered loudly
as he crossed the stage.
Only the top six anglers advance to the final competition
day on Sunday. They will fish the same six-hole course. Hole
priority is awarded to anglers based on current CITGO Bassmaster
Angler of the Year standings.
Also on Friday, BASS announced Elite angler Mike
Reynolds of Modesto, Calif., as the winner of the Hottest Rig
Running Contest on www.Bassmaster.com <http://www.bassmaster.com/>
. Reynolds, boat design features the four U.S. military seals
and the phrase "These Colors Don,t Run. It garnered more
than 20 percent of all votes cast in the final round of the contest,
earning him the grand prize, $10,000 cash.
Lastly, Saturday will mark the opening of the ESPN
Outdoors Expo at the Charlotte Merchandise Mart. The expo
is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET and admission
is free.

KEVIN VANDAM LEADS BASSMASTER AMERICAN
$250,000 Top Prize; Same-Day Television
Coverage Highlight 2nd Major
July 27, 2006 - CHARLOTTE Kevin VanDam is
looking to regain his status as the BASS all-time money winner
from angler Denny Brauer and the three-time CITGO Bassmaster
Angler of the Year is well on his way. VanDam boated a limit
of 16 pounds, 4 ounces during Day 1 of the Bassmaster American
presented by Advance Auto Parts on Lake Wylie. He held a slight
margin over Pennsylvania,s Dave Wolak (15-6).
With a win at the lucrative four-day tournament,
VanDam would add $250,000 to his career earnings of $2.06 million
and overtake Brauer, who has about $17,000 more. The two have
leap-frogged back and forth for the title lately. Brauer had
it for years; VanDam took it in June and then Brauer reclaimed
it during the Champion,s Choice on Lake Champlain in New York
in July.
However, Brauer,s stay at the top might be a short
one.
VanDam was the first angler to weigh-in on Thursday
and his total crushed anglers, earlier weight predictions. Fishing
fans can tune into ESPN2 on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET to see if VanDam
hangs onto the lead.
"It was a great day for me. It certainly is
hard to catch over 16 pounds on Lake Wylie, the Kalamazoo, Mich.,
angler said. "I am staying very observant on the water and
really paying attention to weather details - the sun and the
wind. I feel pretty confident with the pattern I have going.
The two-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion
described that pattern as a power-finesse fusion but declined
to get more specific. He fished the southern end of Wylie and
had company at his locations: Former lake guide Jason Quinn (32nd
place, 9-2) and Florida angler Peter Thliveros (tied for fourth,
12-9).
VanDam is seeking redemption after missing the
top 12 cut at the first Bassmaster Major in May on Eagle Mountain
Lake in Fort Worth, Texas. "I love fishing this kind of
format, VanDam said of the six-hole course anglers will fish
on Days 3 and 4. "I just felt sick that I didn,t make the
cut in Fort Worth.
And despite sitting in second place, Wolak wasn,t
completely satisfied with his day.
"I think I missed a number of opportunities
out there, the 2005 Toyota Rookie of the Year said. "I only
caught seven keepers during the day. It was a struggle.
Wolak hit a number of spots on Wylie, spending
very little time in each and quickly moving to the next. His
bag included the Purolator Big Bass of the Day, a 5-7 bass.
In third was Alabama,s Lee Bailey (14-15). Trailing
Bailey and tied for fourth with 12 pounds, 9 ounces was Bassmaster
Memorial winner Thliveros and Alabama,s Aaron Martens.
After weigh-in, Thliveros realized he is in position
to win consecutive Majors - a lucrative proposition. "That
would be pretty cool, he said. "I love the competition and
I don,t see any reason why I couldn,t do that.
After Friday, the field will be cut to the top
12 anglers, who will fish a six-hole course in a timed rotation
on Saturday. Only the top six anglers advance to the final competition
day on Sunday. Hole priority will be awarded to anglers based
on current CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings.
