JORDON FLIPS TO VICTORY ON POTOMAC
Reese a Close Second; Angler of the Year
Race Tightens Up
Auust 13, 2006 - CHARLES COUNTY, Md. Kelly
Jordon had caught a limit of small fish Sunday morning and was
ready to make a run to a spot with bigger bass when he made just
a few more flips.
When he landed a 4-pounder, he decided to stay.
Then he caught two more big bass that gave him the heaviest limit
of the day with 17 pounds, 15 ounces, and a narrow victory in
the Capitol Clash presented by BUSCH Beer on the Potomac River.
Fishing fans can watch the exciting conclusion
on The CITGO Bassmasters Saturday, Aug. 19 on ESPN2 at
10 a.m. ET.
The personable pro from Mineola, Texas, had a four-day
total of 19 fish weighing 60 pounds, 9 ounces to claim his fourth
BASS title and the $100,000 first prize. Skeet Reese of Auburn,
Calif., was second with 18 fish weighing 60-2.
Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., who is locked in
a battle with Mike Iaconelli for the CITGO Bassmaster Angler
of the Year title, finished third with 57-8. Iaconelli, of Runnemede,
N.J., was fourth with 55-6 and now has a 45-point lead over Kennedy
in the point standings going into the final CITGO Bassmaster
Elite Series tournament next month on Missouri,s Table Rock Lake-
The Rock presented by TheraSeed.
Day 3 leader Rick Morris of Virginia Beach, Va.,
who had a 2-ounce lead over Iaconelli going into the final day,
slipped to fifth with 54-12.
Jordon, who was third after Day 1 and then tumbled
to sixth after Day 2, began Sunday in fourth place, 6 ounces
ahead of Reese, who was fifth. He started fishing in a creek
with a buzzbait and had two fish miss the lure, but he followed
up both times with a Senko and caught both bass.
When the topwater bite slowed, Jordon pitched to
holes in the grass in the creek, but he didn,t get any bites.
"I did that until 9 o,clock, Jordon said.
"Then I said it was time to flip mats, because that,s how
I was catching them all week.
The Texan, who has amassed more than $800,000 in
career earnings, said the only problem was that there were no
mats visible unless the tide was low. The outgoing tide
was happening later and later in the day as the tournament went
on.
"So I ran to where I knew there were
some big mats in the main river, Jordon said. "I planned
on catching a small limit.
Jordon had caught some small fish from those mats
during practice. Flipping the thickest mats he could find in
3 to 4 feet of water using a 7-foot, 9-inch Fenwick rod, a new
Abu Garcia REVO STX reel spooled with 65-pound SpiderWire, a
1-ounce Lake Fork Tackle tungsten Mega-Weight and either a Lake
Fork Tackle Craw Tube or a Kicker Craw, he got a bunch of bites
and quickly had a limit weighing about 7 pounds.
"Then I caught a 4-pounder, he said. "Then
another 4-pounder. Then a 5-7. I caught them all from 11 to 12
o,clock and never got another bite.
Those fish gave Jordon the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag
of the Day, but until he weighed in, he said he was sure Reese
had him beat with his limit weighing 17-14.
Reese, who led after the second day and caught
the majority of his fish flipping a Berkley Power Hawg around
fallen trees, was done in by a tough day Saturday when he brought
only three fish weighing 8-15 to the scales at Smallwood State
Park.
"I had a great day today, said Reese, who
has now had finishes of second, third and fourth on the Potomac
in BASS events. "I,m pleased with what I caught, but obviously
I,m extremely disappointed I didn,t get a win. The reason I didn,t
was yesterday. I didn,t execute. I should have had at least 15
pounds, but I had fish come undone or break off because of the
barnacles. It hurts.

Virginia Angler Morris Seeking First BASS
Win
Top Two in Angler on the Year Standings
Right Behind
Aug. 12, 2006 - CHARLES COUNTY, Md. Rick
Morris has always done well in Bassmaster tournaments on the
Potomac River.
After catching yet another solid limit Saturday
on the third day of the Capitol Clash presented by BUSCH Beer,
Morris is poised for his best finish ever.
The Virginia Beach, Va., pro brought five bass
weighing 16 pounds, 10 ounces to the scales at Smallwood State
Park for a three-day total of 43-10 and a 2-ounce lead over 2003
CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion Mike Iaconelli.
Alabama,s Steve Kennedy, who is second behind Iaconelli
in the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year point standings, was
6 ounces behind Iaconelli in third place with 43-2. Texan Kelly
Jordon with 42-10 and Californian Skeet Reese with 42-4 rounded
out the top five. The top angler Sunday wins $100,000.
"I,ve probably fished 10 BASS events here
over the past 15 years, said Morris, who finished third in the
2003 Bassmaster Northern Open, third in the 2002 Bassmaster Eastern
Open and fourth in the 1998 Bassmaster Top 150- all on the Potomac.
"Before that, I used to fish Federation Nation tournaments
on the Potomac, so I,ve got 20 years experience here.
That experience has helped Morris, whose best finish
this year was a second in the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Tohopekaliga
in February, stay focused on fishing a creek south of the launch
site that several of the other athletes who made the top 12 cut
Saturday have been fishing.
While some of those anglers struggled to catch
five keepers and left to check out some other areas, Morris stayed
in the creek and waited for a late bite, keyed by a falling tide,
to happen.
"I had five bites today and that was after
everybody left, said Morris, who was in 20th place Thursday and
moved up to 15th Friday before jumping into the lead. "It
gets better late in the day.
Iaconelli, of Runnemede, N.J., a five-time BASS
winner who won the Southern Challenge presented by Berkley on
Lake Guntersville in April, went from 14th place to second with
a limit weighing 16-5 for a total weight of 43-8. After placing
41st the first day of the tournament, Iaconelli moved to an area
with three grass beds and caught all of his fish Friday from
the second of the beds.
"I started out fishing at that bed today and
stayed there, Iaconelli said.
Kennedy, of Auburn, Ala., moved from seventh place
into third with a limit weighing 13-14. He caught one keeper
in the morning, then went through a dry spell until he pulled
up on a patch of grass that he,d found during practice, but hadn,t
fished during the tournament.
"I caught all but one of my fish [that he
weighed] from that spot in less than an hour, said Kennedy, who
is 50 points behind Iaconelli in the AOY standings. "Then
the tide dropped out and I never got another bite.
Brian Snowden of Reeds Spring , Mo., had the BUSCH
Heavyweight stringer of the day- a 19-14 limit- to jump from
33rd to sixth at 42-2. Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark.,
had the Purolator Big Bass of 5-1. McClelland sits in seventh
with 41-9.
Mike Frazier of Orlando, Fla., held onto his lead
in the co-angler division to finish with nine bass weighing 22-5
and win a Triton boat package valued at $45,000. Shawn Huwar
was second at 20-10 and fellow Virginian Mark Letosky was third
at 20-3.

CALIFORNIA'S REESE VAULTS INTO POTOMAC LEAD
Two Elite Winners in Top Five
August 11, 2006 - CHARLES COUNTY, Md. Patience
paid off for Skeet Reese Friday as the California pro waited
for the tide to "get right and took the lead on the second
day of the Capitol Clash presented by BUSCH Beer on the Potomac
River.
The two-time BASS winner from Auburn, Calif., who
started the day in eighth place, had a five-fish limit weighing
17 pounds for a two-day total weight of 33 pounds, 5 ounces.
Mike McClelland, winner of the Sooner Run Elite
Series event on Oklahoma,s Grand Lake in June, climbed from seventh
into second with 32-6. Four-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic winner
Rick Clunn of Ava, Mo., was third with 32-3.
Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water
action from the Capitol Clash on ESPN2 Saturday, Aug. 19 at 10
a.m. ET.
Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., remained in fourth
place with 30-9. Hackney also won an Elite Series event in March-
the Lone Star Shootout on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas. Alton
Jones of Waco, Texas, made one of the biggest moves, going from
32nd place to fifth with 30 pounds after catching the biggest
stringer of the day at 17-13.
First-day leader Kevin Langill of Terrell, N.C.,
caught only two keepers weighing 4 pounds to drop into a three-way
tie for 34th place with 22-1. The 102-angler field was cut to
the top 50. The top 12 after Saturday will fish for the $100,000
winner,s check on Sunday.
Reese said he fished the same general area as McClelland,
Clunn and Jones. He was not affected by the bright, sunny weather
that replaced the overcast, rain-filled skies of the previous
day.
"Nothing was different for me, Reese said.
"I kept fishing the same stuff over and over and over. Once
the tide got right, I caught them.
"It,s stressful waiting and waiting and waiting.
I caught one fish early and from then on I didn,t catch a fish
for several hours until it got right.
McClelland, of Bella Vista, Ark., said he moved
around a lot in the area and caught all his fish during a falling
tide on a War Eagle spinnerbait. McClelland is seeking his fifth
BASS win.
"It feels like the good old days, said McClelland,
who loves to throw a spinnerbait. "I pulled out the spinnerbait
and threw it all day.
"I,m not putting the spinnerbait down for
the rest of the week. I,m fishing for aggressive fish.
Clunn also threw a spinnerbait and a crankbait
until the tide got too low. Then he moved into some creeks and
flipped.
"I did catch my biggest fish that way, but
not many, Clunn said. "I caught most of my fish Thursday
on a crankbait, but I,m losing the right tide in that area.
On the co-angler side, Mike Frazier of Florida
moved from second place into the lead with six fish weighing
16-7. Donald Muir was second with 16-4, followed by fellow Marylander
Ian Dunevant with 16-2, Mike Acord of Pennsylvania with 15-13
and Chad Hicks of Virginia with 15-12. The top co-angler on Saturday
wins a Triton boat package valued at $45,000.

LANGILL SURGES TO CAPITOL CLASH LEAD
Elite Rookie Finds Gold in Stormy Weather
August 10 2006 - CHARLES COUNTY, Md. Overcast
skies and scattered rainstorms made for much better fishing than
anticipated on the opening day of the Capitol Clash presented
by BUSCH Beer on the Potomac River.
CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series rookie Kevin Langill,
from Terrell, N.C., led the way with a five-fish limit weighing
18 pounds, 1 ounce for a 4-ounce advantage over Oklahoma veteran
Tommy Biffle.
Most of the 102 CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series anglers
said they caught more fish and bigger fish Thursday compared
to what they had during the three days of practice leading up
to the tournament.
Kelly Jordon of Mineola, Texas, was third with
17-9, followed by Bernie Schultz of Gainesville, Fla., and Greg
Hackney of Gonzales, La., who were tied for fourth at 17-6. Four-time
CITGO Bassmaster winner Rick Clunn of Ava, Mo., was sixth at
16-13. The top pro wins $100,000.
Langill, who had fished the Potomac only once before
-- as a co-angler -- said he stumbled on a promising pattern
during practice.
Fishing fans can watch all of the action from the
Capitol Clash presented by BUSCH Beer Saturday, Aug. 19 at 10
a.m. ET. on ESPN2.
"I picked up on a little deal, the 34-year-old
Langill said. "I,m fishing main river grass beds, really
isolated cover way off the bank that other people are overlooking.
It seems the bigger fish come off these isolated areas.
"I,ve got guys fishing in front of me and
behind me, but none of them are fishing where I am.
Biffle, the winner of the Empire Chase presented
by Mahindra Tractors on Oneida Lake last month, said the change
in weather conditions from hot and sunny to wet and cloudy made
him change his tactics.
"I had a slow practice, Biffle said, who joined
the BASS millionaire,s club in career earnings after his Oneida
victory. "I had one place with a lot of bites and I thought
they were small fish, but I went there to see if I could catch
a limit. As soon as I got there, I changed baits [from what he
used in practice] and caught all big fish. I had 10 or 12 fish
and I didn,t catch any that weren,t keepers.
Jordon had the Purolator Big Bass of the Day at
5-12. Schultz was right behind him with a 5-10 that he caught
on a HeadBanger buzzbait that he designed for Hildebrandt. Schultz
also caught fish on a Dean Rojas Frog and a 5-inch Senko.
"It was a shock to me, believe me, said Schultz
of the size of his stringer. "I would expect today to be
a bonus day compared to what we saw in practice.
Virginian Mark Letosky led the co-angler standings
with three fish weighing 10-11. Mike Frazier of Florida was second
at 9-14, followed by Marty Scoggins of Georgia at 9-11, James
Funk of Virginia at 9-2 and Josh Kolbinsky of Indiana at 8-14.
The top co-angler after Saturday wins a
