KDHE lifts Harmful Algae Advisory at Hillsdale
August 26, 2011 - KDHE and The USACE have lifted the Harmful Algae Advisory at Hillsdale Lake. The advisory which was posted in late July and reported by several local news stations has severely decreased lake attendance this summer and as a result has caused dramatic loss of sales for the State Park and Jayhawk Marina, according to Scott Robbins of Jayhawk Marina.
His business, as others have around the lake and other lakes affected by the algae alerts, has suffered during the alert period. This year has seen a number of lakes affected by the algae alerts.
Typically, media outlets tend to run stories supplied by the state when lakes go under warnings and advisories, but the word doesn't get out as fast when the state lifts warnings and advisories. The public can check current warnings and advisories by going to http://www.kdheks.gov/algae-illness/algae_advisories.htm for the latest information.
Kansas Angler Online has the link posted on all of the Kansas Fishing report pages and the home page. Zeiner's Angler Supply has the link posted on their home page and on Jim Zeiner's Blog page in an effort to help the public find out if the lake they want to visit has a current warning or advisory.
