Hack Attack Best In World for 2005
August 16, 2005 - Following are the State
Farm World Rankings as updated after last week's Cabela's Top
Gun Championship on Eagle Mountain Lake in Ft. Worth, Texas.
These are also the 2005 season-ending rankings, as no more events
will be held in 2005 that will count toward the World Rankings.
Highlights of post-Top Gun movement include:
> Greg Hackney ends the season as the No. 1
angler in the world, making him the only angler other than Kevin
VanDam since the World Rankings debuted in 2001 to end a season
in the No. 1 spot. Hackney, who finished 10th at Top Gun, saw
his World Rankings point lead stay at 12 points not surprising
as he finished higher (10th) at Top Gun than Marty Stone.
> Marty Stone (15th at Top Gun) and Skeet Reese
(12th at Top Gun) remain 2nd and 3rd in the world, respectively.
> Terry Scroggins is helped by his 11th-place
finish at Top Gun, and gains a spot in the rankings. He's now
4th in the world. Kevin VanDam, who was eligible to compete at
Top Gun but did not, falls to 5th in the world. His points do
not change.
> Edwin Evers and Takahiro Omori finished 6th
and 7th at Top Gun, and remain 6th and 7th in the world.
> Top Gun winner Brent Chapman, who did
not fish this year's Bassmaster Classic, moves up one spot to
finish the season at 8th in the world. Chapman has been solidly
in the Top 10 in the world, or close to it, for a while now.
> Alabama's Matt Herren is helped by his 5th
at Top Gun, and finishes the season in the Top 10, at 9th in
the world.
> Mike Iaconelli, 17th at Top Gun, remains ranked
10th.
Top Gun anglers under the Top 10 in the world who
moved more than two places include:
> Anthony Gagliardi falls three places to 11th.
> David Walker gains four places to 14th.
> George Cochran, whose 3rd at Top Gun marked
his third Top 4 championship finish in a row, gains four places
and is now 17th in the world.
Notable
This was the highest-ranked field ever in a tournament,
which has a couple of effects on the World Rankings.
> Since the whole Top Gun field was close to
one another in the rankings and the field was small, there's
relatively little movement overall. An exception is Aaron Martens,
who was in a tight points cluster prior to Top Gun. Since everyone
around him gained points and he did not (he chose not to fish
Top Gun, and his points did not change), he falls 10 spots to
21st in the world. He will likely climb again as long as he keeps
fishing well at the start of the 2006 season.
> There's now a gap in the points between those
who competed in Top Gun and those who did not. That gap will
decrease as the larger-field events are once again counted in
the rankings in 2006.
This fall, in the tour off-season, BassFan will
be taking a look at adjusting the State Farm World Rankings to
possibly include Bassmaster Elite 50s/Majors and potentially
other events.
Hackney Crowned No. 1 Angler
In World For 2005 Bass Fishing Season
- Fellow Pros Give
Him Standing O -
August 15,, 2005 - FT. WORTH, Texas -- Greg
Hackney, the Louisiana phenom who has taken the professional
bass fishing world by storm the last few years, is the No. 1
angler in the State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings after the
2005 season. Last night at the Cabela's Top Gun Championship
here, he was awarded the State Farm No. 1 in the World trophy
and $7,500 State Farm No. 1 Bonus. He received a standing ovation
from his fellow competitors and the crowd.
Hackney is only the second angler to be No. 1 in
the world since the rankings debuted. The State Farm World Rankings
are the only statistical rankings of professional bass fishermen,
and Kevin VanDam, this year's Bassmaster Classic winner, had
been No. 1 at the end of the season for the prior three years.
But Hackney displaced him this year. The State
Farm World Rankings use a rolling two years of tournament finishes,
and Hackney has been on a tear for the last two years. He finished
second in the point races on both major tours -- the Bassmaster
and FLW tours -- in 2004, and this year won the FLW Tour's Angler
of the Year award (first in the points) and was fifth in the
Bassmaster Tour points.
Simply put, no one has come close to fishing as
good as he has. He winds up the year No. 1 in the world by a
huge double-digit points margin, and is the odds-on favorite
to end up No. 1 in the world again after 2006.
"When I started the season I never dreamed
I'd be No. 1 when the year finished," he said. "It's
awesome do be in this position, especially since it will be another
six months before anyone has a chance at me."
On the trophy and the bonus, he said, "My
biggest goal when I came (to the Cabela's Top Gun Championship)
was to leave with that. When you're in that position, it's not
everyone else's to win. It's yours to lose. But after I caught
them on day one, I pretty much knew I had it."
The State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings are the
official world rankings of professional bass fishing, and are
calculated using a formula that incorporates finish data from
both major tours (the Bassmaster and FLW tours) and their two
championships. The rankings use a rolling two years of tournament
data, and are recalculated after each tournament.
About the event:
The Cabela's Top Gun Championship takes the 25
top-ranked professional bass fishermen in the world, regardless
of which tour or tours they fish, and puts them on the same body
of water. The anglers are the best in the world according to
the State Farm World Rankings, which rankings anglers who fish
either or both of the pro fishing tours: the Bassmaster Tour
and the FLW Tour.
The event is title-sponsored by outdoor outfitter
Cabela's (www.cabelas.com), and is presented by Skeeter Boats
(www.skeeterboats.com), the Outdoor Life Network (www.olntv.com)
and BassFan (www.bassfan.com). Supporting sponsors include State
Farm Insurance (www.statefarm.com), Mann's HardNose Baits (www.mannsbait.com),
Bagley Bait Co. (www.bagleybait.com), Lowrance Electronics (www.lowrance.com),

Television coverage:
The Cabela's Top Gun Championship telecast will
air Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10:00 a.m. EST on the Outdoor Life
Network. Additional coverage of the event will appear on FOX
Sports and OLN (Americana Outdoors and Fishing and Hunting Texas).
Full 24/7 coverage is on BassFan.com.
