June 29, 2004 - Response to Gordon - I think you can see we all love to catch Stripers. There is nothing like catching one of these monsters. I also have to question your thoughts about how they die. I have to agree with Mike on this one. How the hell are there numerous 20+ pound Stripers being caught every year if all they are going to do is die. These fish are obviously a few years old. Fish kills do happen, and when they do Stripers are not the only thing that die, so why single them out not to restock. I also don't appreciate you being a smart ass in your responses. DUH! Yeah the perch are a major problem. We didn't cause the problem either, if I remember is was a fishery biologist that mistakenly put the damn things in there in the first place. I also don't see how stocking thousands or even millions of fry of any fish species is going to do a damn thing. It will take them a couple years to get big enough to do any real damage to the perch, and the perch are so aggressive that they will have all the fry eaten up before they get big enough to do anything. YOUR ONLY FEEDING THEM!!! As for the commercial fishing, I don't know how to do it, but how do they do it up at Kanopolis. I know for a fact that they are catching drum, carp ect... up there. Maybe the nets are not fine enough to catch perch, I don't have all the answers. But I damn sure know that you don't need to be coming on this web site and be a smart ass over things that we are posting to each other. People talk, we throw around ideas, and even if you think it is stupid, hey maybe one of us will come up with an idea that could help. But from the sounds of it even if we did your ego would not allow you to accept anything we might suggest.

I am threw, I am getting off my soap box now for a while. Ryan

June 29, 2004 - Raising Fees-
If you read last sundays paper you would have read that the KDWP is talking about raising fees again this year. Annual camping may go as high as $250.00. Vehical permits will go up. Fishing permits, boat permits evey thing will go up. This will force a lot of people like myself to stay home. Most places I have camped the service has gone down but the fees go up, tipical.
Write the KDWP and let them know you are not inclined to support the raising of fees to use the lands and lakes we as tax payers own aleready. Terry Schauner

June 29, 2004 - Cheney and Response to Gordon -
Started fishing M&M around 2pm, Light winds and cloudy skies made for a very very nice day on the lake. Wipers were in rather large schools, and a few Stripers were mingling around the edges of some deep water humps. It didnt take long for our lines to start ripping off the reels. My friend scott caught his largest Striper ever today a beautiful 17 lb fish. I lost a large one right at the boat when he wrapped around scotts line, and lunged for the bottom.. SNAP!! yup he broke me off and took my 3 way rig with him. We caught around 30 Wipers today, from 4 to 14 lbs. about 6pm went back to M&M and found some large schools of white bass hanging on a 10' hump, I put down the trolling motor and we spooned up 30 of them in a hurry! What a day it was. Then I got home, and turned on this computer and saw Gordons email... Yeah I have some thoughts about some of the things he said, but I think I will keep most of them to myself for now.. I do however wish he would RETHINK the Striper stockings... Yeah, Sure they DIE when it gets too hot!!! They also DIE when We clean them!!! It is just what they do!!! I had someone at the fish cleaning station today talking about Wilson lake and how big the stripers are there... Well, Cheney has large fish also, and It is sure alot closer for me to go to Cheney than to Wilson! And I guarantee you I can catch more fish at cheney than at wilson anyday!!! SO WHAT, GORDON!!! FISH DIE!!! SO DO PEOPLE! ITS THE WAY OF LIFE! Im sorry, but you really seriously need to start rethinking about Striper stockings! Every one I have cleaned have been full of White Perch! THEY ARE EATING THEM! and they are very very healthy fish! SO what if it gets HOT again, and some more die! Restock the dang things, and more will live! They will also grow up, and we will catch lots of them! Fisheries Bioligists retire! And they are replaced also!! should we not hire anymore because they leave? HMMMMM.... something to think about.. that is what a man said to me today at the fish cleaning station! Maybe we need someone who is not so pig headed as our fisheried Biologist! ( I didnt say it gordon, someone else did, but maybe he has the right idea?) After all, WE are the sportsman who buy fishing license, and spend Thousands of dollars on boats, tackle, gas, parks passes, etc etc etc.... Do we not have a say so? WE THE FISHERMEN KNOW WHAT WE WANT, AND IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE IT FOR US! IT DOESNT TAKE A DEGREE IN BIOLOGY TO FIGURE THAT ONE OUT!!!
So... Let some of them die during a hot spell, Replace them with live healthy fry, and they will make us all happy, and not be so disgruntled with stupid ideas!
MIKE E.

June 28, 2004 - Cheney Reservoir Fisheries Management -As the Wildlife and Parks fisheries biologist at Cheney Reservoir, I read this site to keep up with what's going on for the fishing reports I post on the department's web site. I don't read it to get ideas on how to manage the fishery. Sorry, but there are better places to go for that kind of information. I wonder at the way you guys rave about the fishing, and then suggest I do something different. I also notice that somebody wakes up about every week or so and discovers that white perch are a nuisance and need to be dealt with. Duh! What does it mean when someone worries about Kansas anglers going out of state, and then in the same paragraph mentions a Texan coming here to fish.

I'm not going to stock stripers (unless there are surplus nobody wants, which almost happened last week) because they die in the heat. No, it hasn't happened recently and the stripers are "thriving" now. That's what they do right up until they die.

Commercial fishing the white perch would be a great idea if you can tell me the gear that catches the white perch without killing thousands of game fish in the process. How many hours of electrofishing a thousand white perch per hour would it take to make a dent in a 10,000 acre reservoir? If we did somehow remove a million white perch, how long would it take those remaining to fill the void? It only took ten years for them to go from zero to a royal nuisance.

What we are doing is stocking a ton of walleye and wipers, and trying to protect them with some of the most restrictive (two per day over 21 inches) harvest regulations around.

2003 stocking record
30 million walleye fry
65,000 walleye fingerlings
14,000 wiper intermediates (7-10 inches)
216,000 wiper fingerlings

2004 stocking record
30 million walleye fry
22,000 walleye fingerlings
5,700 wiper intermediates
234,000 wiper fingerlings

June 24, 2004 - Stocking Question - I'm wondering why the stocking dates at Urban Fishing sites is updated post stocking..Its a great asset to those who fish the neighborhood stocked lakes..Please tell us if this a new policy...

June 23, 2004 - Question on Cheney White Perch - Is there nothing more the KDWP can do to rid Cheney of the White Perch infestation. One of my buddies and I went fishing last Sunday from the bank off of refuge point. We started out using jigs and crankbaits looking for some wiper or walleye. My buddy kept saying he was getting little bumps, about 5 or 6 per cast but was not catching anything. After only catching a couple of small white perch and drum we starting trying to catch the little bastards. We use tiny trout hooks and little pieces of worm. As soon as the worm hit the water you had one, about a 3 to 4 inch white perch fingerling and they were thick. We also caught a few small wiper 8 inches long or so along with the perch. My question is, if these things are so distructive why won't the KDWP open the lake up to commercial fishing like they do Kanopolis for the Rough Fish, or why don't they do some electro shock fishing for the damn things. They are out of control. Ryan

June 23, 2004 - Catch and Release -
KANSAS LAKES ARE TURNING INTO GREAT FISHING LAKES , IF WE CONTINUE TO TAKE THE GREAT BIG FISH OUT THEN WE ONLY HAVE GREAT LAKES. THE MARINAS HAVE SCALES AND DO KNOW WHAT SPECIES OF FISH THAT ARE BEING CAUGHT. I THINK KIDS THAT CATCH A LARGE FISH SHOULD BE KEPT AND PUT ON THE WALL, EVEN STILL A CAMERA AND A RULER IS ALL THATS NEEDED TO MAKE A FIBERGLASS FISH AND THE TROPHYS GET BIGGER AND A PICTURE SAYS IT ALL AT THE DOCKS THIS IS ONLY TO SUPPORT ARE FISHERY AND ARE FUTURE .. TIGHT LINE

June 21, 2004 - Catch and Release - Is it just me or do some anglers not have a clue about releasing larger fish. An 8 pound smallmouth and you ate it? What are you thinking? Take a picture, measure it, at the very least do everything within reason to keep it alive, weigh it on a certified scale, release it, and have a replica made. Same goes for the 50+ flatheads and 25+ catfish and other trophy fish. These are the fish that maintain the quality fishing in KS now and if we keep culling them fishing in KS will be poor at best. Eat smaller fish that in all likelihood are much better to eat anyway. William Miller

June 18, 2004 - Question on Cheney Walleye - What is going on with the walleye at Cheney. I have heard very few reports of anyone catching anything out there all year, including the spawn periods. Sure you hear of a few here and there but nothing like the action we have had before. Ryan

June 18, 2004 - Cheney - I just wanted to say, since the KDWP isn't going to stock striper's in Cheney anymore, I wish you fish hogs would throw back them 10+lb stripers and wipers. A smaller fish is much better to eat and these fish would eat a lot of pesky white perch, which would benefit the reservoir. Alan

June 18, 2004 - Response to Bass Stocking at El Dorado - In 2003, the KDWP stocked a total of 644,735 largemouth bass fry and 85,257 fingerling largemouth in to El Dorado Reservoir along with 28,710 smallmouth bass fry. The largemouth were chemically marked with OTC so individuals that recruit to the adult population can be identified. This is useful as it provides a means by which the contribution of the stocking can be followed. Samples were collected at the end of May and results are not yet available.

In 2004, a total of 287, 277 largemouth bass fry and 89,231 smallmouth bass fry have been stocked to date with more largemouth scheduled to arrive in the next couple of weeks.

The purpose of these stockings is to take advantage of the available habitat that is required by young black bass---AQUATIC VEGETATION! A aquatic vegetation establishment project has been underway for many years at El Dorado and the vegetation is now reaching levels where it may be enough to greatly benefit stocked black bass fry. Without the nursery habitat provided by the vegetation, these stockings would have very little chance of surviving the rigors of life in a Kansas reservoir.

So to answer your question in short, yes these stockings are an attempt to increase black bass angling opportunities in El Dorado Reservoir. It is still too early to know how effective this will be and just like any other situation, there are no silver bullets or magic potions in fish management!!

June 17, 2004 - Answer to Boat Registration - You will have to register the boat in your name. You can probably keep the same numbers. Don't worry about a temporary permit. Just go to a State Park office or Regional office and you will walk out the door with your registration. Under 16 ft costs $21. Over 16 ft costs $26. Gordon Schneider-KDWP

June 16, 2004 - Question about Boat Registration - Not exactly a fish question but important non-the-less. Recently my grandfather past away. I purchased his older boat from the estate. We have found the original title, (Missouri), however, the boat had been registered in Kansas, but cannot find the actual registration card or any paper work from Kansas. It is placarded with KS #'s with a 2006 expiration. What will I need to tranfer the boat into my name? Can I get a temporary permit to use the boat until the matter is cleared?

If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it. I am an avid fisher with out a boat for the past 6yrs. I now the advantages, and would love to get it in the water ASAP.

June 16, 2004 - Answer to Milford Certified Scales - Any grocery store should have a certified scale. My best guess would be either Junction City or Abilene.

June 14, 2004 - Milford Certified Scales? - Do you know the nearest certified scales to Milford State park main entrance?

My wife caught an 8lb Smallmouth (we think) out of Milford, We stopped at Jim's gas station where he weighted it and told us he wasn't sure it was a Smallmouth. A week later we stopped by again and he was sure, But we ate it. Here is a couple pictures. It's a hard luck story we would not like to repeat.

June 8, 2004 - Reply to Stripers at Cheney - LAST SUNDAY WHEN I CAUGHT 15 STRIPER I ONLY KEPT 2. THE REST WENT BACK TO BE WHITE PERCH EATING MACHINES. ACTUALLY I DON'T LIKE EATING STRIPERS/WIPERS. LAST YEAR I RELEASED 95 TO 98 PERCENT OF THE STRIPERS/WIPERS I CAUGHT. ROUGHLY 30 - 40 FISH BACK IN THE WATER. SO I PRACTICE CATCH A RELEASE. I USUALLY KEEP ENOUGH FOR A FISH FRY AND THROW ALL BACK. EVEN THE HUGE WALLEYE I CAUGHT LAST YEAR. I THREW MANY 6 LBS. BACK. COULD HAVE CLEANED THEM BUT I PUT THEM BACK. GOOD QUESTION TO ASK. I HOPE MORE PRACTICE CATCH AND RELEASE. MARK.

June 8, 2004 - Trolling Answer - In answer to your question about trolling speed, I agree with what Mark said last week, all the instructions and answers to all of your questions about catching large Wipers and Stripers on Cheney are in the history pages on this website. I have told you all over and over how its done, shared my favorite spots... etc etc etc... READ the History pages... Read the 3 way rig instructions that is posted on the front page. Its all spelled out for anyone who wants to know anything about how to catch Large fish and massive quantities of fish with the 3 way swivel rig. Go back to 2002, and begin reading.. take notes.. Try it You will Definately Like It! MIKE E.

June 7, 2004 - Trolling Question - I'm just getting into trolling and wondering if there was an average speed that you troll at. I'm going to try this three way rig on your page.

June 7, 2004 - Stripers in Cheney - Perhaps I'm missing something, but it sounds like the white perch-eating machines in Cheney are going in the livewells when caught by some of your reporting anglers.

Can someone explain why one of Cheney's best hopes for controlling white perch (stripers) are being removed from the lake by fishermen?

Thnx!
Steve Yentes

June 6, 2004 - El Dorado Question
I noticed that in 2003 El Dorado got stocked with a bunch of bass fry and fingerlings. I never hear or read reports of El Dorado for bass. So is this large stocking in attempts to get El Dorado better for bass fishing? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Dominic

June 4, 2004 - Fishing for wipers with liver? - I still don't understand why you don't make it possible for people to post a comment or report without having to send an email to you. This is the worst system of any website I have ever been on, so with that said please post this question to your soundoff page.

I have heard some people catching wipers on liver. How much liver do you place on your hook and what size hook do you use. Do you fish it on the bottom or drifting or what? Any tips for catching wipers with liver is appreciated.

May 22, 2004 - Wilson, Cheney and Not Fishing for Wipers - JUST FINISHED UP A REALLY NICE WEEKEND FISHING TRIP TO WILSON LAKE IN THE SMOKY HILLS. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL LAKE. WENT WITH ONE OF A VERY FEW FISHING FRIENDS I GO OUT WITH . DURING OUR TWO DAY STAY. THERE WAS TWO FISHING TOURNAMENTS GOING ON WITH THE KANSAS STRIPER AND WALLEYE ASS. WHAT A CROWD. NOT ONE PARKING STALL AT THE BOAT RAMP. ANYWAY, DURING OUR TRIP I BROUGHT UP THE WIPER FISHING AT CHENEY. I TRIED TO GET HIM TO GO OUT WITH ME THIS SUMMER AND RIP SOME LINE ON THE BIG FISH. EACH TIME I TALKED ABOUT IT HE WOULD NOT GET INVOLVED IN THE CONVERSATION. FOR YEARS I HAVE TALKED TO HIM ON THIS ISSUE OF BIG WIPERS AT CHENEY. NOW MY FRIEND HAS A NEW DEEP-V ALUM. BOAT AND LOVES TO STRIPER AND WALLEYE FISH. I FINALLY ASKED HIM WHY HE IS NOT INTERESTED IN WIPER FISHING. BEFORE I GIVE YOU HIS ANSWER LET ME TELL YOU THIS. HE IS 60 YEARS OLD. HAS NO ANSWERING MACHINE. NO CELL PHONE. NO CABLE/SATELLITE. NO INTERNET. HAS A NEW F-150 AND NEVER USES THE KEYLESS ENTRY. HIS IS A PRACTICING CHRISTIAN. HIS ANSWER WAS "WIPERS ARE MAN MADE AND I DON'T FISH FOR THOSE". I KEPT MY MOUTH SHUT. I NEVER HEAR OF SUCH. CRAZY. JUST FLAT CRAZY. ANYWAY, DID CATCH MANY 15" WALLEYE AND THE GUY IS GREAT TO BE WITH AND WE HAD A GREAT TIME. MARK.

April 22, 2004 - Kingman SFL Question - Anybody know how big of boat you can get on kingman lake? I've heard its shallow. Would a 19ft deep v aluminum boat with a trolling motor be alright?

April 13, 2004 - Coffey Co. - Watched the weather for Monday and decided it would be best to head east. Heard reports that Coffey Co. was really hot so I checked the local conditions at Burlington and seen the wind was 5-10 mph for at least an hour, so I thought it would be safe to venture east for the 2 hour drive. Arrived at the lake around 1:00, and after seeing no trailers at the ramp, I knew I was in trouble. Looked at the water and didn't even see a whitecap, but I knew they had the lake shut down. Went in the office to verify my worst fears, and yes, to them, it was way too windy. All I could do is look at them and know they obviously have never stepped foot in a boat. All I could remember about the lake is that they have two time periods for which they impose wind restrictions. From Oct. 15 to Apr. 15 differs from Apr. 15 to Oct. 15 due to water temps. I looked at their wind meter and for nearly two hours, the wind speed was well below the limit, so here I am wondering why in the hell I am not out on the lake catching fish after fish. But they told me it was to their individual discretion whether to allow anyone on the lake, period! One guy told me that is was way too rough to have a boat on the lake, so be happy and either go to Melvern or fish from shore. It was hard to understand his reasoning, adding to the fact that the wind was out of the east! So being upset about traveling 2 hours with high expectations and not being able to fish like I would, I told him to buy his own boat and venture out there and explain to me why it is too rough to fish! Then I graciously went down to the dock area and decided to fish and wait for dead calm conditions. I noticed the guy who would not let me go was done with his shift and left. Minutes later, the next guy in line came down and told me to get a pager and go out and fish. With about 2 hours to fish, I figured I could at least catch a few. Made it out towards the dam, and caught 10 walleye from 16-20 inches, 1 15" crappie, 1 nice blue cat, and a white. Fish were biting really well with water temps close to 58. Went to check in and thanked to man for letting me venture out over the 5-6" waves. He told me it would be a very good idea to call ahead next time. He said regardless of weather conditions, each person in charge of the check-in station has different views on if the lake is fishable or not. So the main point of this article is for those who have fished Coffey Co. before, the rules have apparently changed. It seemed before they used to go strictly on wind speed and direction, but that is not the case anymore. So for future reference to everyone, please call their office before you leave to avoid the problems I ran in to. Lucky for me, I still caught what I was after, but who knows how many more I would have caught given a couple more hours. Stauf

April 12, 2004 - Looking for donations to help with kids' fishing tournament
Dear Sir,
I am a High School teacher who loves to fish. I want to give back to the community by hosting a Kids Fishing Derby on July 3rd at the Bronson City Lake in Bronson, KS. I am expecting 30 kids from agea 15 and under. I want to educate the kids on the wonderful sport of fishing. I am promoting fishing for fun. I want the kids to unplug themselves from the computers and video games and enjoy the outdoors. The derby will be from 7 AM to 11 AM. Our FFA will be serving hotdogs and sodas for everyone. I want the derby to be totally free for the kids. I am needed help. I want every kid who participates to receive some type of prize. I am looking for small prizes such as lures and t-shirts. I do not want any money. Do you know anyone who would be willing to donate some small prizes. I am looking for a professional fisherman who would like to give the kids a talk or even a demonstration on techniques. The kids will be fishing from the bank using live bait or lures. The large awards will be trophies for the largest fish, smallest fish, most fish caught, and the most unusual catch. i am very excited and I am trying to get things in motion early. Please feel free to foward this to anyone whom you think can help me. I am also tossing the idea of having an adult tournament that same morning. I am looking for suggestions and how to successfully run a small tournament. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Chris Woods

April 8, 2004 - Looking Forward to Kansas Slabs - A recent visit to alabama, Iwent crappie fishing with my brother and cousin on an oxbow lake off the tom bigbee river only caught about a dozen, However they were quality fish. Lookin forward for kansas slabs

April 6, 2004 - Question on electrofishing sample on private water - I'm part-owner of an 8-9 acre pond that appears to be heavily populated by bass under 12 inches in length. I've talked with my area fisheries biologist and he gave me some good info. about how to improve this situation, and I then asked him if he could do an electrofishing sample to truly test to see if there are little or no larger bass. He said he just doesn't have enough time to do this so I was wondering if you know of any private individuals who offer this kind of service?

Thanks for any info. you can provide.

April 6, 2004 - Trash and Suggestion for Cheney - This isn't really a fishing report, but just a couple of things I had on my mind. First of all, would everyone please stop leaving their bait containers, food wrappers, uneaten food, and other assorted pieces of trash on the ground near the lakes. There are usually places provided for these items - they are called TRASH CANS.

Second, why don't they try stocking some flathead and/or blue cats in cheney? I would think that they would help to get the white perch under control along with providing another excellent angling opportunity.

April 1, 2004 - Place to Crappie Fish - My dad has been wanting to do some crappie fishing lately so I'm wanting to know if anyone has any good places they know for Crappie. I wouldn't say more of a few giant crappie, but where we could go out and just catch a bunch of crappie. The drive doesn't matter too much, but the closer the better though. My dad said Cheney thirty years ago was good for crappie, but I haven't read any reports about crappie there before. Any info would be appreciated. Feel free to email me at Huskyhush@hotmail.com
Thanks,
Dominic

April 1, 2004 - Question on Rod - I would like to get someone's opinion on what action and length of rod works best for trolling a three way rig? I also have heard that spider wire of fire line will cut throught the water and allow bait to work deeper. Can anyone confirm this. I am curious as to what action rod would people recommend for trolling a three way rig? and why? Also what line to use for main line from pole? Curious about the use of Spider wire. thanks. blc

March 30, 2004 - Council Grove -
Went fishing below the tubes at Council Grove 2 weekends ago with my brother. There were many large walleye carcuses on the ground around the fishing area. We caught several large walleye and lost many that were accidentally snagged. We released all of them. My brother has been going over to the tubes almost every day the past week. and has seen many people keeping a lot of snagged fish up to 9 lbs. He called the fish and game to complain but nothing has been done.... One day 2 park rangers did stop by for about 15 minutes but didn' t even get out of their vehicle. Very disappointing to see the apathy in our law enforcement.............

March 22, 2004 - Walleye Tactics - I have been Walleye fishing for 25 years in Kansas. I remember my Dad taking me early evening to get a good spot. I remember losing lure after lure after lure. I guess times have changed. I been going to Cheney a lot over the last ten days, and had been doing pretty good. Last Friday was my last time I will go back there too! It takes me an hour to get there, and an hour to get home but usually it was worth it. Friday night, the 20th my brother and I got there about 5pm to "get a good spot." We set up about 40 yards apart from one another and kept working our lures. As it got darker, more and more people showed up. Then as the fish moved up from deeper water to the edge, we started working our other lures close to the damn. We had guys get in between us, tangle up there lures with ours. We had idiots walking along the damn, pulling there stick baits. Rudely getting in between traditional fisherman. Thanks for stepping on my Fenwick rod my Dad left me and breaking it. I had someone pick up my net, and walk away while I wasn't looking at my gear 15 yards away from me next to my bucket. I heard drunks yelling at one another, less than a hundred yards away. So much for being quiet, as I was taught. The damn is big enough for everyone, and they are all over it. But I guess the only good place to fish is by me, 10 feet away from me or my brother. Thanks for ruining a great tradition, and experience I was going to share with my boys. I will not go back. Usually people I have ran into fishing us common courtesy, and have good ethics, but not at Cheney. I know it gets dark and you cant see were people are, but if you listen, you can hear a guy casting his lures. You can walk down alittle bit to see where other's might be. When you hear, "Oh yeah, he is long enough" makes ya wonder if they even know what the legal length limit is there. And one more thing you might want to consider at Cheney, you can go later, like midnight, and no matter what time you leave, you will almost always see more coming. Concerned fisherman.

March 19, 2004 - Cheney - anyone wishing to respond. mr. "D" cove. north of wichita point. i have never herd of any reports of fish in that area. it has deep water in it. anyone ever do any good fishing in that area? any humps adjacent to deep water? i have never fished there.

March 19, 2004 - More on Walleye Spawn - This is in response to the one who disagreed with my earlier Marion report. I hope you did not misunderstand my article. What I was trying to say is that I believe the best time to target these fish at this time would be when the fish are staging. From what I've read, walleye feed heavily in preparation for the spawn. I believe this includes the period from ice-out to the spawn. Also, I completely understand that not all walleye spawn at the same time. I believe they generally spawn from anywhere between 45 and 58 degrees. So much depends on the weather, such as rapidly warming air temps as well as heavy rains which can also warm the water quickly. But my whole point is that when certain fish are "spawning", catching them in a feeding mode is very rare. If they do hit a lure, it is usually strickly out of reaction, not due to hunger. I believe it is the sole reason the fish stage before the spawn. Walleye need to feed aggressively in order to build enough reserves to carry out their respective duties which the spawing process requires. But from what you said, I agree you can definitely catch walleye while they are spawning, but it doesn't mean they are "feeding". I guess I would much rather fish for walleye when they want to eat, not when they are mating. Believe me, when you hit it at the right time, the fishing before the spawn can be as active as when it is in May and June when the fish are once again feeding aggresively to restore what they lost during the spawn.

Return to Reports from Kansas Anglers

March 17, 2004 - Farm Pond - This fishing season isn't off to a grand start. Took a trip last week down to Texas to take my mom to the hospital. Will try and stay short with my stories... Rented a boat to fish lake fork. About to launch... my dad has to do something so we had to drive to a gas station... on the way there my three poles in a bass pro carry bag fell out of the boat... tried to find them, but were gone... Bought a new pole and a kinda junky reel, but can't be picky. A front hit that morning as well and turned off bass fishing. We ended up landing five bass, but nothing big like that lake is known for... My dad uses crappie jigs and catches bass all the time with them. I caught my two bass on a Kalins five inch grub.

Stopped by bass pro on the way up to at least replace one of my poles.. Met Jimmy Houston and my dad also bought a boat. So I am planning on selling my little john boat as well as my wristwatch hummingbird fish finder... Might even sell of some lures I don't plan on using. I plan to get it all on the web... anyone interested can email me at Huskyhush@hotmail.com

Okay my stories doesn't end there... My brother and his friend went to a farm pond to go fishing... I get a call at home... to bring the tow chain... I should have known better. I don't have four wheel drive on my trailblazer, but it does have a strong engine in it. Well their truck is in the mud very bad.... no room to even move the tires... I try to keep my distance because there is water all around where he drove through... Don't think a four wheel drive truck can handle anything. Well all the ground was too wet so my tires just started to spin... I somehow kept on inching back and sure enough I got stuck. Not too bad, but bad enough to know I can't get out. Called my dad and he brought his dodge sprinter van to maybe tow me out.. but the truck was nearly 100 feet in the muddy area... I knew best bet was to get a winch... So I finally took charge and called Arrow towing... And they came and saved the day... Very nice company. The farm pond was still chocolate milk and chilly. I did catch one bass on a colorado blade spinnerbait with crawfish scent. The friend caught two bass on a shallow diving crankbait.

This is the year of fishing mishaps for us... but my dad did win the lottery to start off the year. So there is no room to complain, but only room to enjoy the mishap that happens.

Good fishing to everyone.

March 16, 2004 - Walleye commentary -Sorry, but I have to disagree with the statement that walleye don't strike a lure during the spawn.

I catch lots of walleye -- male walleye -- when they are spawning on the rocks. Don't know whether they hit a lure because they are hungry or because they are trying to chase it away, but if you cast a Rapala into a pod of spawning walleye, there's a really good chance that a male will smack it.

Also, even during the height of the spawn, when there's lots of splashing along the dam, there will be male walleye feeding around the rocks later that same night. I've stood in the moonlight and watched them swim right around my feet, nosing into the rocks. I've always assumed that they were hunting for baitfish, because they LOOK like they're hunting for baitfish. And they're easy to catch on a Rapala or Rebel cranked shallow through the rocks.

March 15, 2004 - Walleye question - Who can I ask about how walleye spawn on the lakes. Is it the males come up first, then the females? Or females come up and then the males? Kerrytrebbe@aol.com or Chelim@bfsnapa.com

March 15, 2004 - Cheney - Well, I have been getting antsy so I thought I would try to fish the damn out at Cheney on Friday night. We arrive out there about 9:30p.m. or so. We stayed out there until about 1:00 a.m. There were a few fish splashing
around every hour or so but the definitely are not at the dam in great numbers as of yet. I saw one guy catch one but it got away from him then I saw a few kids catching a few.

This really irritates me. We can't fish the spillway and are not supposed to fish around the spillway structures, signs say to keep out. Honestly, it would take a blast bigger than the Oklahoma City Bombing to blow up that dam. The sign should say if you see someone driving a Rider Truck into the spillway call 911. I don't think it right to keep us out of the best fishing spot on the dam, BUT if the are going to restrict the area, that means the area is off limits to everybody. I sit out there and respect the
sign, hell I was leaning on it while I fished. I admit I crossed over if I
got hung up or something, but I stayed out of the area. SO I sit and fish
for 3.5 hours and catch nothing. These other people would just decide that
the signs did not apply to them and they fished in the restricted area and
caught 6. GOOD FOR THEM, but this really ticks me off. I am not going to
call and be a snitch, but I am amazed on how some people can think that
specific rules don't apply to them. DON'T YOU GET IT. IF YOU DON'T STAY
OUT OF THAT AREA THEY WILL CLOSE THE ENTIRE DAM TO FISHING. SO STAY OUT OF
THERE. I know there are fish in there but, tough. They are off limits. Do
not ruin it for everyone.

Sunday we went out to Cheney again to fish in the river. We caught nothing
again. No one was catching a thing. We ended up going to Christmas Tree
Cove and we caught about 50 white perch in about 2 hours. I was catching
them two at a time on a crappie rig with worms. A couple were very big over
a pound.

How big do white perch get? Some that I caught were big enough they didn't
have to worry about getting eaten any more, unless a big striper or flat
head got them. These things are taking the lake over. Is there no way to
net them, in large fishing nets and then sort out the sporting fish and get
rid of most of these things?

March 13, 2004 - Marion - in response to the marion story. your absolutely right when the 'eyes are on the spawn they will not eat, however not all 'eyes spawn at the same time. you could probably find post & pre spawn eyes in areas adjacent to spawning areas. best method would be slip bobber or still fishing as even these fish will be in a negative mood. and you'd have to tease them into saying ok you've been there for 5 minutes i'm gonna eat you. good luck. i'd have been at kanopolis saturday if it hadn't been for the wind and rain.

on another note kdwp says the spawn is on @ cheney and they have their nets out. i went after midnight till about 5am friday morning and didn't hear a single fish wallow in the shallows. water temp was 45. with no wind. still might be able to get some pre-spawners @ cheney as well.

and finally one other note.... kdwp has finally posted 2004 fish forecast. take a look at scott state park for walleye action. the report from there sure surprised me.
good fishing every one!

March 12, 2004 - Marion - Went to Marion last night and had two walleye up to the rocks, but they managed to make the release fairly easy. My starting point for fishing the rip-rap has always been around 42 degrees. And from that point on, I'll fish the rocks with rogues and Jr. thudersticks and have great success until they are in full-fledged spawning mode. I've been walleye fishing for 12 years now, and every year seems to be the same. When I start hearing the fish splash in inches of water, its pretty much time to wait another few weeks and get the boat out. If I have ever caught them past that point, they are usually snagged by accident. It makes sense to me that the best time is when the fish are FEEDING, not SPAWNING. When these fish are in the spawning mood, they generally have no intention on eating until they are done with there job. So in retrospect, the best time to go for me is now, not next week when there is 42,000 people standing side by side watching these magnificent fish swim back and forth through their legs and around their baits and splash all night long. Don't get me wrong, you can still get an occasional male to hit off of reaction, but it may take 200 casts to do so. Also, for me the best times are just befor sunset to a couple of hours after, and then the same around sunrise. Keep in mind, a friend of mine was fishing at Wilson the night the state record was caught. He said the fish were in full spawn mode and hardly anyone had caught a fish all night. All anyone heard was the spashing of males and females. Then, all of the sudden, a lot of splashing and yelling occured just down from him. He swears to this day that the fish was snagged in the back. I sure hope that was not the case, but I would'nt doubt it. GOOD LUCK!

March 10, 2004 - Commentary - "DID YOU KNOW"? I RECENTLY PURCHASED A LOWRANCE X-19 COLORED FISH FINDER. A VERY EXPENSIVE, STATE OF THE ART, SONAR UNIT. I'VE USED LOWRANCE PRODUCTS FOR 15 YEARS AND HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH THERE PRODUCTS. I INSTALLED THE X-19 AND THE UNIT IS BROKE. NO PROBLEM. I SHIPPED THE UNIT TO TULSA, OK. AND THERE GOING TO SEND A NEW ONE TO ME. AFTER TALKING TO THE SERVICE TECH. I HAD A FEW QUESTIONS FOR HIM. ONE QUESTION WAS. WERE IS THE MANUFACTURING AREA AT FOR LOWARANCE? MEXICO. ALL THEY DO IN THE U.S.A. IS DEVELOP, SOME SERVICE, TECH. HELP, WAREHOUSE. ABU GARCIA/RAPALA IS MANUFACTURED OUTSIDE THE USA. DON'T KNOW A BOUGHT GARMIN. I'M SURE I WOULD BE AMAZED WITH ALL THE PRODUCTS I HAVE IN MY BOAT TO FIND OUT MOST ARE MADE OUTSIDE THE U.S.A. I RECENTLY WENT SHOPPING FOR BEDROOM FURNITURE. FOUND OUT THAT MOST OF THE FURNITURE WAS MANUFACTURED IN CHINA. THERE WERE A FEW AMERICAN MADE. I WORK IN A MANUFACTURING PLANT WERE 400 - 600 JOB ARE MOVING TO MEXICO WITHIN ONE YEAR. MY WIFE HAS ALREADY BEEN LAID OFF DUE TO THIS HAPPENING. I ASK? IS THIS GOOD FOR AMERICA? IS THIS GOOD FOR MEXICO/CHINA? I LEAVE THAT UP FOR DEBATE. I HAVE THREE CHILDREN AND I'M ALREADY ENCOURAGING THEM TO NOT SEEK MANUFACTURING JOBS AFTER COLLEGE. I WILL QUOTE ONE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE ON AMERICAN COMPANIES SEEKING OTHER NATIONS TO MANUFACTURE THERE PRODUCTS. "HOW UNPATRIOTIC YOU ARE ON DOING THIS". (RALPH NADER).

January 12, 2004 - Cheney - WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF THE ELDERLY MEN THAT LOST THEIR LIVES LAST SAT. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ICE FISH AT CHENEY LAKE AND FELL THRU THE ICE AND DROWNED. I TOO HAVE BEEN OUT THERE ICE FISHING BACK IN 2000-2001 AND CAUGHT A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF FISH AND REMEMBER THE GOOD MEMORIES OF THOSE TRIPS. I'M NOT A EXPERT ICE FISHERMAN BUT A MIN. OF 4 TO 5" OF ICE IS REQUIRED BEFORE I VENTURE OUT ON IT AND DON'T GO OUT ON THE ICE UNLESS I SEE MANY ALREADY OUT ON IT. LIKE I SAID ICE FISHING IS VERY ENJOYABLE IF THERE'S NOT A LOT OF WIND. YOU CAN CATCH A TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF FISH AT THE RIGHT TIME AND LOCATION. ONE LOCATION I LIKE BEST IS NORTHWEST OF THE ISLAND 1/8 A MILE OR SO IN 16 - 18' OF WATER FISHING OFF THE BOTTOM A FOOT OR SO. YOU HAVE TO WALK OUT ON THE ICE 1/2 MILE OR SO TO GET THERE. IT GETS COLD OUT THERE.
...
THANKS GORDAN FOR THE REPORT ON REQUESTED STOCKING FOR 2004. I'M PUMPED FOR THIS LATE SPRING INTO SUMMER. I AGREE ON THE WALLEYE. LAST YEAR THE WALLEYE I CAUGHT WERE HUGE. I CAUGHT NO WALLEYE UNDER 18". GET THAT HEAVY GEAR READY GUYS. THOSE WIPERS WILL RIP LINE LIKE YOU WON'T BELIEVE. I BET IN A FEW YEARS OR SO CHENEY WILL HAVE THE KANSAS RECORD CAUGHT AND I HOPE THAT'S ME THAT REELS IT IN. MARK.

January 9, 2004 - Response to question on water treatment at Cheney - I'm no water treatment specialist, but I read that they are adding ozone treatment. This basically oxidizes and breaks down organic particles. It is done in the water treatment facility and will have no effect on the lake or the fish.

I requested (in round numbers) 30 million walleye fry, 100,000 wiper fingerlings, and 10,000 wiper intermediates (about 7 inches).

It's only been a year since we started the white perch management plan, but there has been very little change in the white perch population. If anything, it may be even more entrenched. We have good numbers of large walleye, with almost no small walleye to replace them. The bright spot is that there are good numbers of wipers 12 to 15" coming on. If anything is going to put a dent in white perch numbers, it will have to be the wipers.

January 8, 2004 - Question on Water Treatment on Cheney - question on the new water treatment cheney lake is going to install. i read the article in the wichita eagle a few weeks ago of the equipment they're going to install to prevent the water from smelling and tasting funny. can any biologist (cheney) explain how the process will be done? any effects to the water inside the lake before it leaves the dam? any effects to the fish? also, what's the request for stocking for 2004 for walleye, wipers? any fall (2003) report of netting results of said fish?
