Iraq - RESPONDS TO MR IN IRAQ. I'M NOT IN THE MILITARY
BUT IT IS WONDERFULL TO HEAR FROM ONE OF OUR BEST ACROSS THE
COUNTY FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM. IF NOT FOR MY FREEDOM FOR MY
CHILDRENS FREEDOM IN YEARS TO COME. I'M FULLY, COMPLETELY, UNCONDITIONALLY
SUPPORTING YOU AND OUR TROOPS OVER IN IRAQ AND AFGANISTAN. I
READ CNN SEVERAL TIMES A DAY AND KEEP UP DAILY ON WHAT'S GOING
ON IN THAT AREA. EACH DAY IN MY TRUCK COMING TO WORK PART OF
MY DAILY PRAYER IS TO BRING PEACE IN THAT AREA. I WAS OVER AT
A FRIENDS HOUSE A WHILE BACK AND HE HAD A PICTURE OF A U.S. SOLDIER
ON THIS REFRIGRATER. A SOLDIER IN IRAQ. A SOLDIER SERIOUSLY INJURED
LYING ON HIS BACK WITH EXTREAM PAIN ON HIS FACE WITH HIS PARNER
BY HIS SIDE WITH HIS WEAPON GUARDING HIM UNTILL HELP ARRIVES.
I ASKED HIM WHY HE HAS THIS PICTURE ON THE REFIGRATER. HE STATED.
ANYTIME I'M HAVING A BAD DAY. I THINK MY LIFE IS A DISASTER.
I LOOK AT THIS PICTURE OF THIS SOLDIER AND IT GIVES ME HOPE AND
I SAY TO MYSELF. I'M HAVING A BAD DAY? THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME
OUT OF YOUR LIFE TO SERVE OTHERS.
September 25, 2004 - Thanks
from in Iraq - I just wanted to write in and say thanks
to all of you who give your reports to this site. I am in the
military and currently stationed in Iraq. Being able to read
about your successes is a welcome distraction from everything
that is going on here. Trust me it has meant a lot to me. So
thanks to all, and don't stop writing in. MR
September 22, 2004 - Comments on Cheney
- In answer to Marks question How Many fish did I
catch this year? I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA! haha. I totally agree
with you about things being totally different at Cheney this
year! Last year I caught Stipers WAY more that Wipers! Probably
10 Stripers to every 2 Wipers. This year its been pretty even.
June and July I know we caught close to 100 Stripers and I know
even more Wipers. Largest Striper was 28 lbs. Largest Wiper was
16 lbs. Many Wipers in the 10 to 12 lb range. and Most Stripers
around 14 to 17 lbs, with several to 24 lbs.
( I Just picked up a 25 lb fish from my taxidermist that I had
done for a friend of my Brothers that came in july with him from
Colorado. It was the first Striper he caught, and believe me,
it is an AWESOME mount! My Taxidermist is Tom Kinder in El Dorado.
He was my High School Biology teacher, and also taught Taxidermy.
I wish I would have taken the class!! He only charges $5. an
inch, and his is the best work I have personally ever seen!)
The walleye have been extremely scarse for me this year! I think
Totally I have caught under 10 Walleye, but they were extremely
large fish. The White bass were extremely numerous! Most averaging
2 lbs. It was a nice cool summer. The last few weekends we havent
done too well. I too have SNAGGED lots of Wipers in the last
2 weeks. Trolling the 3 way the lure catches them in the side,
and man what a fight! I havent kept accurate numbers like mark,
but I did catch many nice fish. There were some days when I couldnt
get a bite from a big fish, so we anchored and simply caught
White Perch. Litteraly 100's of them!! That is also some great
fun!! Cant wait for next season!

September 2, 2004 - Response to question
on deep lake fishing - It is hard to say what might
be showing up on your sonar, but I have a couple of ideas. Sauger
are a deep water fish and love to loaf in the depths of rivers
and lakes, and as a general rule, steer away from current. Another
thing to think about, in the heat of summer, which has been unusally
cool this summer, if one finds fish at the deepest parts of our
lakes, they are generally very inactive. These are probably very
large fish that are nocturnal or would rather feed during low-light
hours only. I did fish Kanopolis on Monday and marked a large
cluster of arches in 28' of water at the tip of a point during
the middle of the day. I stayed over them with a jig and crawler
and caught all the catfish, drum and white bass I could handle,
but nothing of much size, but it was nice to at least catch what
you were looking at. Another thing I have been contemplating,
is maybe purchasing an underwater camera. I have never had the
interest in one since it feels like cheating, but using it to
learn about situations like yours, I feel they would be worth
their weight in gold. Hey, you can only trust you sonar so much,
why not know exactly what you are seeing, it will save you a
lot of time and money in the long run, plus more fish in the
boat. Hope this helps.

August 31, 2004 - Question
on deep lake fishing - Not sure this is the right
source to inquire about fishing deep in Kansas Lakes or not.
If not could you direct me in the right direction? I do not usually
pursue any one particular species of fish, I just like to have
some success when out on the lake and enjoy being out there.
I have had success drift fishing for catfish in Perry Lake and
some success in Clinton. I am not into baiting and waiting at
the hog trough, I like to move around and enjoy drifting or trolling.
I am getting started in Downrigger and long line
fishing. Have been successful to some extent on picking up a
keeper sauger or two at Perry Lake long lining crankbaits. I
notice on my sonar the great numbers of fish that are showing
on the bottom in thirty + feet of water. I understand in our
lakes here in Kansas we have an enormous amount of rough and
bait fish, but we also have some very large catfish that set
on the bottom also. I have been told stories of Arkansas fisherman
using downriggers to catch enormous cats on the bottom. I am
wondering why that can not be done in Kansas with great results.
I just do not know how to start pursuing these monsters by using
downriggers to get down where they are. I guess I know how to
get down there, just not what to use. I can control the depth
with downriggers so I could put the bait wherever needed. I have
tried running fresh 4" shad on a three way swivel just off
the bottom, through, and over the top of what I suspect to be
catfish but no interest. Am I wasting my time pursuing these
fish? They are two large a fish for bait fish, they appear as
arches on the sonar not a solid mass usually within 10' off the
bottom. The only thing it could be would be drum, carp, gar or
catfish right? Thank You for your time. Steven E. Woelk

reply to : July 14, 2004 - Fishing Story
-I was fishing at Lovewell lake in Kansas this past weekend and
caught a fish and I'm unsure of what the name of the fish is.
I tried to research and find out what it is, but haven't found
any information on it. I was wondering if you could tell what
kind of fish it is. It was a white colored fish with yellow eyes
and teeth. The eyes were almost like walleye eyes, but it was
more of the shape of a drum or carp and had teeth. Also my dad
hooked a carp that was probably at least 40lbs, do you know what
the state record for carp is? If you have any information on
this let me know. Matt
The fish in question sounds to be the Goldeye. Here's a link
where you can find a description and picture http://kansasfishes.com/Pages/goldeye.htm
.
Kansas state record for common carp is 47 lbs. 1.6 ounces .You
can find all Kansas records at http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/fishing/Fish_Records.html#anchor426478

August 23, 2004 - Question
on Lovewell Lake - Here is another website you might
find useful for identifying Kansas fish species, especially the
mystery fish out of Lovewell Lake. The website is: http://www.kansasfishes.com/Pages/goldeye.htm

Eyes Comment - That looks like the fish I was talking
about. Thanks for providing the link. Tom
August 13, 2004 - Matt's question about
Lovewell: - Not sure of the official name but at Milford
they are called Goldeneyes. Can be fun to catch and also good
for cut bait. Vance
August 13, 2004 - Moon
Eyes Comment - Here is the scientific info of the
fish that is being caught. It's from the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources, but it's what is being described. http://www.iowadnr.com/fish/iafish/moe-card.html

August 12, 2004 - Matt's question about
Lovewell: - I was up there a few weeks ago and I caught
a couple of those fish. I asked a local and he told me they called
them "moon eyes", and I think they are overgrown shad.

August 11, 2004 - Comment-
I'm a relatively new visitor to this website and I
have to tell you that I would love to meet Mike E. out at Cheney
sometime. I retired a couple of years ago and this year I decided
to get back into fishing. I fished some back in the sixties and
I can tell you that we caught huge numbers of big walleyes at
Cheney. I always remembered Cheney as a great fishing lake. A
fellow military man from Indiana taught me how to catch the walleyes
and back then we never heard of stripers or wipers. Reading Mike's
comments have helped me catch fish. I especially appreciate his
willingness to explain how he is so successful. I tried his 3-way
rig and it does work well and is fun to use. I realize that when
I catch a wiper or white bass it is essentially dumb luck on
my part because I don't have the electronics on my boat that
others have but it seems I have more luck using Mike's advice
than any other thing I've tried. Mike E., please don't stop your
commentaries. There are a lot of us idiots out there trying to
put a fish or two on the line and you have been a great help.
August 6, 2004 - Bass Saturdays -Sounds
great, but some important info is left out. What channel is this
show going to be on? Thanks. Dominic
August 4, 2004 - Request for info on Melvern
- I have a small club tournament for bass at the end
of august. I would like to know if someone would share a little
information on this lake. Thanks Rich
August 2, 2004 - Last
Time I Fished on a Sunday -My son & I were having
an enjoyable morning on el dorado this last sunday having caught
a few under-sized walleye some white bass or small wipers and
some small catfish (all released). that is until about 11:30
when the pleasure boaters started taking to the water. do they
not know safe boating rules.? i had one pass less than 30 yards
from behind on my port side then less than 30 yards in front
of me (while i was trolling) and then he swung to less than 30
yards to my starboard and cuts 30 yards astearn of me to head
back from whence they came. the problem is i had 200 feet of
fireline out behind my boat which of course got caught on his
lower unit. after making my feelings known he did come to a stop.
i motored over and asked if he had cut the line off his prop
or how did he dispose of it. he hadn't even looked at it and
sure enough it was still there. it had not tangled his prop so
we were trying to retrieve the line to respool it and so i could
keep the 6 dollar lure. this is the part that i like. we had
gotten the lure up but as we did our boats drifted apart and
guess what. he got impaled. we did get the hook removed.
this would not have happened at all, if he had been paying attention
to his surroundings while operating his boat.. he did apologize
and i accepted.
Since then I've come up with a plan.
Sterilize El dorado. kill every single organism. there will be
no fisherman there thus leaving the whole lake for the pleasure
boaters. no more zebra mussel problem either. but wait! That
wouldn't work because the west siders would want cheney sterilized
also.
So I then made a promise to myself to never fish on a sunday
(during the day) ever again and to wait till 5:30pm or so before
i head out.
